I can recall seeing something similar to these tombs in Thurso on the north coast

http://maps.live.com/default.aspx?v=2&FORM=LMLTCP&cp=58.600062~-3.533864&style=h&lvl=18&tilt=-90&dir=0&alt=-1000&phx=0&phy=0&phscl=1&encType=1

From what I can remember as a kid It was a tomb for The Sinclair family who owned the land.
Surprised that it is still there actually as it was pretty close to the edge last time I saw it
It's always funny 'til someone gets hurt and then it's just hilarious

Yes, I see what you mean.
That looks as though it could be gone in a few years.
If it wasn't so far away I'd check it out. Perhaps one day!
Shame it's not available to view in "Birds Eye" view as I'd like to see it from a few angles.
I'll see what Google throws up.

Thanks for sharing!

Was checking out the old maps from 1899.
Just found that other tomb the signalman was talking about.
It's the one on the left. The one on the right being the one I was at today.

This is getting out of hand! There's dead bodies lying all over the countryside. ::):

Damn!

Went up there tonight. Spoke to the farmer about the tomb. He said he'd gladly give me a tour of it but he had cows with young calves in that field at the moment and tonight was a no-no. "You'll only scare them", he said.

We made a date for next weekend though. Top bloke!

He also gave me a tip-off for another tomb nearby.

You know it's weird this tomb thing. You turn up at someones house and say, "Can I look at your tomb?"
You expect them to say, "Get orf moi laaaannd!" and pull out a blunderbust from behind the door and set four fox-hounds on you but they don't. It's as if they're kind of happy to see you. Well, so far anyway.

He said I wasn't the first to come by asking about the tomb and that he used to get people who'd come over from Canada looking for ancestors just dropping in. I was the first for a few years though.

Showed him the pics I'd taken of Arns and he said "Hmm, mines has goat tombstones roond aboot it!"
Ya beauty! He also said it was overgrown a bit with ivy and he'd been meaning to clear it away.

Anyway, next weekend it is then.

Seriously, great work.

Thanks Toomse!
The farmer I spoke to last week (whose tomb I'm going to see at the weekend) told me about a tomb at Lochgreen. It's right next to an old firing range.
I found it on the old maps the other day;

I've since been in contact with the landowner who has asked me to phone him midweek with a view to visiting it. So I'm hoping to do that over the next few days.

So that's two I've got to go and look at. :D :D

He also said there's one just up the road at "Blackhill", which is slightly to the west again.
Unfortunately I can't find this one on any of the old maps.
Hoping to get more info on Blackhill when I see the guy at Lochgreen.
This guy is also a bit of a local historian so I'm hoping to get some info on the ones I've already found.

Cheers

I can't find any reference to a tomb at Blackhill or the general vicinity on the present day OS maps. This makes it unlikely that there’s anything there as these diagrams are very accurate.

I’m determined to keep you busy this weekend Purplepantman

Here’s another tomb at Easter Glentore 1300m from Blackhill south of West Fannyside. I wonder if this is the tomb referred to by the farmer.

slightly off topic

I wonder if there’s any local history behind the interesting name Thieves Hill

There’s a couple of mentions on Canmore that refer to a deserted settlement

Thanks Toomse! Yes it must be as neither of us have located a tomb at the other Blackhill.
I'll need to check this out very soon! Possibly even tonight as it's just up the road from me.

Re the other tombs;
I've arranged to go see the one at North Woodend tomorrow am.
I've hoping to see the one at Lochgreen possibly Sunday night but I'm at the mercy of the landowner.
I'll post pics as soon as I can.

Also about "Thieves Hill";
Yes, I've noticed this name before on the old maps and often wondered about it.
Didn't know there was a settlement there at one point but there are many abandoned farmhouses in the surrounding area . Here's a map from 1922...

Image

The whole area around there is full of abandoned farmhouses, old railways, mineshafts, wells, lime-kilns, old rigs etc. It's a goldmine if you're into that sort of thing :D .

I'll keep you posted on the tomb(s) thing.

Cheers

The road which runs past Palacerigg and up past Wester Glentore, Torbrex and Bogside (nice house by the way) to come out at Longriggend is popular with 'courting' couples at all hours of the day and night.

You have been warned

Sorry, I wouldn't know anything about that sort of activity.

Anyway, this morning I went up to Woodend and spoke to the farmer who very kindly showed me his tomb.
I found it very hard to photograph. It was in amongst thick trees, covered in ivy and because of this was very badly lit (even on a morning like this?).

As with all these tombs, the door looks south

Most of the stones had no markings remaining. One had a date of 1759

Some, like this one were more recent

Sorry about the pics. It was hard to get good composition.
If I moved back to far, the tomb just got lost in the trees.

The name Scott seemed to come up a few times on the tombstones.
The farmer said his family had lived there since about 1700 and the Scott's were indeed his ancestors.
Like I said in a previous post, he used to get people turning up from Canada to look at the tomb although not for a few years.
