I've just read through the whole thread and it really is a crying shame - and quite a contrast with the Edinburgh one

I kind of wonder what will ever become of the Zoo.. there is so very little actually left there that, from a photographic perspective, it was difficult to get many photographs that gave any real sense of what it once was. There were the remnants of some old signs, but little else apart from the rusted ruins of a few of the cages. Of those I did get, there was the shot of a graffiti figure, proclaiming "We love the Zoo". Kind of ironic, of course.

As for the prospect of a return visit - I'm note sure there is enough there to justify it. Pity.

After all the recent fuss about visiting the zoo. I decided to take a trip there today to check it out. Here are my pictures from today's visit.

Tyres everywhere almost tripped a few times because of the wire left from those that were set on fire.

There used to be a tree stump/pole with a hole near the top that they would hide honey in every now and again, so that the bear would climb up and scoop it out. Not sure if that's it to the left of the building?

Found these on flickr. They show the derelict polar bear pit. This is my one memory of visiting Glasgow Zoo as a child and it really is chilling - it was horrible to look down into that pit and see a bear in there by itself!

Just read this topic, start to finish, and find the whole thing so fucking sad.
The fact that some animals couldn't be relocated and were still there more than a year later, leaves one with the impression ..out of sight , out of mind. I hated the idea back then as a visitor that the tiger or the polar bear had such depressingly short space.
I was last in a zoo in Basel ( neighbouring town in Switzerland ) about 22 years ago where I saw the most depressed Gorilla in a big panzer glass compound which sat with it's back to the paying guests and would not turn around to have it's photo taken.
Some animals just don't appreciate when they're well off...................! !

What a state the place is in. Even more so than St Peters, it really is astonishing the lengths people will go to, and the sheer physical effort they will put into, destruction.

Most of the zoo has been simply levelled to the ground. The rest has been burnt out.
