You need an old diesel. The newer diesels run at too high a pressure through the injectors.

A lot of folk I know dont even bother with the hastle of old takeaway oil as you can get a 20 litre drum of new oil from the cash and carry for a lot less than 20 litres of diesel.

There is lots ofinfor online about which models will run on cooking oil but if you use it, remember to tell the tax man and pay your fuel duty

Are you not now exempt from having to pay duty if you produce under a certain amount a year, something like 2,500 litres a year? Seem to recall it's something of a grey area.

Should have kept my older 1.9 TD Xantia (although even then, I think its suitability depended on whether it had been fitted with a Bosch or a Lucas fuel pump, a seemingly random factor in the manufacturing process!).

You are not exempt from paying duty, which must be paid at the higher rate for veggie oil, but you are exempt from paying VAT if you produce less than 25,000 a year.

Mind you who in there right mind would tell the tax man they owe him money!! I have grown tobacco before, perfectly legal but you are supposed to pay duty on it as soon as you roll it into a ciggie - yeah right!

Thanks for the great photos ! I guess, even from 12 000 miles away and as a near fifty year ex-pat, the sight of a Glasgow Corporation bus in late 1950's livery still arouses great memories of my past childhood.

Now, if only someone could change the number on that Albion Venturer to 9 or 20 for me and change the destination board to read Drumchapel with accompanying bottom screen, I'd have a photograph of my greatest Glasgow memory !

I loved those buses as a kid !

DVD on Glasgow trams & trolleybuses (although thankfully motorbuses get a fair look in as well).
Most of the footage is taken from the previous Glasgow Trams 1 & 2 videos by Online Video, but there's a good number of added street scenes of trolleybuses and buses, inc work at Larkfield & Knightswood garages, and a nice scene of the exterior of the Kelvin Hall in the snow. Some of the narration is a bit duff as to locations.



It's on Ebay for a fiver.

Superb film, thank's for that link. I presume this is the short made by the BFI Experimantal fund called NINE, DALMUIR WEST. It was directed by Kevin Brownlow who went on to become one of the UK's most important film historians, making the TV series HOLLYWOOD, THE UNKNOWN CHAPLIN, CINEMA EUROPE etc.

A couple of years after shooting the tram short he and Andrew Mollo made the celebrated low budget feature IT HAPPENED HERE, a "documentary" style drama imagining what Britain would have been like following a successful Nazi invasion in 1940. Worth checking out.

Many moons ago I was told that Margaret MacDonald Mackintosh (Charles Rennie's mrs) designed some of the Glasgow Corporation Tramways long service badges.
I'm trying to find some written evidence of this, has anyone here seen it noted in a biography or similar ?

Ken, where is this? Just in today from E-Bay,it's by R.B. Parr, taken on 12 August 1956. Thanks for the tip about the DVD by the way - I got it for a fiver. It has great scenes of St George's Cross as well as the rarely seen Round Toll. When the weans come over I'll get them to explain how to 'grab' scenes from it.
