Linn park bandstand

Postby BTJustice » Sun Jan 06, 2008 6:51 pm

Up untill about a week ago when I got a copy of Old Clarkston and Netherlee by Douglas Nisbet I had no idea there had been a bandstand in Linn park.
I was out today taking pictures for the past present thread and tried to find any evidence of where it was but without success.
This is how it looked;

Image

According to the book it was sited to the north of the gardens which became the zoo but after searching the area there is no sign of the structure or seating. The bandstand was demolished in 1960 but I would have thought there would be some sort of evidence remaining but I couldnt even find a matching slope, the closest I could find by keeping the gardens/zoo to the south of me was this area;

Image

Im still not convinced this is athe area though.

Does anybody else have pictures or an idea of the location?

I have a bee in my bonnet now and would love to try and place its location.

A little bit of Googling has turned up a possible location for the bandstand and it seems I was a bit off with my guess.

I found this pic on the Glasgow story site;
Image

And if we zoom into the park, number 1 is linn park house, number 2 is the site of the gardens where I thought was the possible location but look at number 3.........Could that be a bandstand?
Image

If that is the site then I accidentally took a pic of the area here when I spotted the horses;

I will need to go and get a better look and see if I can see any concrete evidence now I think I know where I am looking.

Just for a little further investigation I decided to see if there was any trace visable on google earth.
Here is the over view with the same points (1-the house, 2-the gardens and 3-possible bandstand location) for orientation;
Image

And zooming in on number 3 there is only the very slightest brown colouration where the path was and nothing else;

Great stuff, BT, the brownish outline does seem to conform to the shape of the Bandstand.

Interesting stuff BT! The bandstand in Tollcross Park was demolished a year, maybe two ago and you'd hardly know it was ever there!

Stumbled upon this old thread when I was updating the pictures for my Cathcart web pages.
Got the wellies on and headed to the park yesterday and got the "Present and Past" picture of the site of the bandstand which you guys were looking for. The site hasn’t changed much, apart from the height of the trees.

Image
Image

The bandstand would appear to have been a short lived wooden structure placed in an old field which has reverted back to what it would have looked like 150 years ago. Looking at the modern Google Earth picture and the 1850’s map, below, you can see the line of the path and the other boundaries almost unchanged. I don’t know when the walled garden to the south of the site was knocked down.

Image

I’ve included present day pictures of Linn House, the iron bridge and waterfall, shown in the 1850’s map, in my http://www.scotcities.com/cathcart/whitecartwalk.htm page if anyone wants a look.

Wandering through Linn Park tast Wednesday I also had the 1850’s map of the other end of the park with me and was surprised that Alexander Thomson’s Holmwood House was not on it. The survey must have taken place before 1858, when it was completed.
Cathcart House was demolished in 1927, after it had been purchased by Glasgow Corporation to add to the park. On the ground, the site of Cathcart House was much more obvious than the bandstand.

Image

In the 1780’s, stone built houses on a hillside had much more substantial foundations than flimsy timber bandstands of the 1920’s, where the only trace spotted by the aerial photographs was the outline of the surrounding path.
I took photographs of the deep hollow, formerly the foundations of the house, which was entered from Old Castle Road, close to Court Knowe (where Queen Mary watched the Battle of Langside) and Cathcart Castle.

I was up the park today and went to get a picture of the location. I used it to overlay the bandstand where it would have stood;

Magic stuff Dave!!

You’re a brave man heading through the trees and the mud to get the same angle as I got last September. I’ll need to find out more about the software that lets you create the fantastic merged images.

Got attacked by a mad dog a few weeks ago on the path beside the site of the old bandstand with a crazy old bint not at all in control of the horrible beast.

I well remember my wee old mammy dragging me through the Linn Park with my wee brother and sister, prams and soggy sandwiches, in the late ‘50s early ‘60s.

So glad I found this thread. Came across a postcard for sale on ebay of the exact scene.

Like the other Dave, I had never been aware of the bandstand in Linn (lived Simshill from 1968).

Well researched. Like the final merged pic. Assume you used Photoshop or similar but I can never get my head round layering.

Dave

The link to the postcard for anyone interested is here (bit pricey if you ask me).

*Added - Just noticed comment about it being demolished 1960 - that explains why I wasn't aware of it.

Hi Dave,

its photoshop I use for my then in now merges and I have quite a few of them on my flickr if interested;
http://www.flickr.com/photos/route9auto ... 030062843/

Here is another from Linn Park;

Image
then in now linn park pavillion by route9autos.co.uk, on Flickr

Those postcards are a good find, I only remember the gardens when they were the zoo with cages and peacocks.

With the closure of the equestrian centre the bandstand field now has a zig zag path running through it to link onto a path that brings you out at Drakmire Drive or loops round to the top of the hill at the white bridge.

I must take a wander up and have a look round once the weather gets better. It's about 5 years since I've been in Linn Park.

I'm one of the sad people that collects postcards (only of Glasgow though! and mostly Victorian). Constantly search ebay for bargains which is the only reason I came across those two of Linn that are for sale at the moment.

I love then and now images. I'll have a look at your Flickr acc in a while. Thanks for the link.
