yes woolies is still there however with their store closure program at the moment then who knows for how long? I think a street level open town square type set up would look good, anything has to be better than the current set up.

Supermarket deal could signal arcade’s revival

A STRUGGLING shopping mall could be set for a revival as part of a supermarket takeover deal.
The Co-op is finalising a £1.5billion move to buy Somerfield supermarkets across the UK.
Glasgow's Shawlands has a Co-op, in Pollokshaws Road, and a Somerfield just a few hundred yards away in Shawlands Arcade.
Competition rules set by the Office of Fair Trading mean either the Co-op or the Somerfield will need to be sold on to another food retailer as part of the takeover agreement.

I was in Centre Books last week and left with Martin Keilty's book on Scottish Rock John Martyn's and Midge Ure's biographies and £3 change from a tenner.

Main St.,Pollokshaws

Postby johndh » Sat Oct 17, 2009 10:05 pm

I had Family that lived in Pollokshaws from the early 1800s to the mid 1900s.There surname was Nicol living at different addresses along Main Street. They had a clothing buisness there I beleive was at 21 Main St. and later moved to 29 Main St.
Can someone confirm for me that Main St. is now called Shawbridge St? and are any of the buildings still standing?
Also my mother went to school there from the 1920s to 1930. They were all presbyterian living at #29 Main St.What school would she have gone to from grade 1?
There is a picture that I found on the internet, google ( 21Main st. Pollokshaws) and you will see it.It is a picture with a store front with Nicol on the front.I would like to find a better picture than this one if someone knows where.
Any help with any other information in regards to the Nicol family would be great

Indeed Main Street is what is now Shawbridge Street. If you go onto National Library of Scotland you will find historic maps which blend in with recent maps to help you identify the locale.

The only original buildings standing on the Main Street end of Shawbridge Street is the washhouse. No other original pre-development era buildings survive on the road. (Main Street ran from the Shilling Green (at Shaw Bridge) to Ashtree Road)

Here is a link to Google Maps GOOGLE MAPS. If you use the Streetview Icon you will see no original housing is left.

Could you link to the page that you have found on google so that we can see it too.

Unfortunately I can't help with news on the Nicol family.

Picture is labled as pollokshaws 23a main st.1925
It shows the nicol store on the left that was not part of the main shot obviously
I would love to get a better picture of this store if possible and any other old shots of main street Plookshaws

I forgot that I had seen that page before, he has some lovely shots.

Here is Pollokshaws Heritage Group Site - http://www.pollokshaws.org.uk/ which has some photographs that are not available in the printed books.

Also some general Pollokshaws shots of the 1960's including the redevelopment proposals. CLICK HERE!

Hi,

I wonder if anyone can help please. I am trying to find out some info on the Round Toll House on Barrhead Road for a uni project. I have a few different photos of the building and have read the heritage book A Brief History of Pollockshaws by Jack Gibson but I would also like to know why the Toll House has managed to survive while other toll houses in the area were demolished ?! Thanks in advance :)
