What about the old Ear, Nose and Throat hospital in St Vincent Street? I, (and millions of other Glasgow weans) left my tonsils there. :(

Looks like the site is being redeveloped again?

You're quite correct Nielmc, there were lots of Yankee service personnel around this area during the war. The biggest U.S. Tranist Camp in Scotland occupied most of the land around the Crookston Castle over to Corkerhill and up to what we called the "Housilwood Round About".
There was an American military hospital at Cowglen and Darnley.

I visited the Dept. of National Savings/Post Office Savings Bank on the Cowglen a couple of times in the 90's to check up on some kind of Post Office investment bonds that I had. The first big shock I got when I first entered the building was the appearance of security guards wearing the American "upside-down" rank stripes on their arms... Yanks guarding the British Post Office, good heavens!

The second big shock I got was that I was taken care of by a Post Office employee who knew exactly what he was talking about, and what i was talking about... all the other Post Office people I'd spoken with in Glasgow didn't know what I was talkng about and I'd gone to the head office as a last recort. The P.O. building didn't impress me, but the people did.

My sister was born there in 1978.

I was born in Robroyston in 1974 - think I might be the only person I know who was, my peers all seem to have been Rottenrow or Bellshill.

I'm sure someone posted pics of the long gone Robroyston hospital on here years ago, but I'm buggered if I can find them. Anyone know anything more about it?

hey Gap 74, I was born in Robroyston myself. Dont recall seeing any pics of it here though.

The hospital impressed my mother so much with its facilities she made a point of having my subsequent brothers in Stobhill.

The David Elder Hospital was demolished in the late 1990's or soon after 2000. Housing now stands within it's grounds.

The Hospital was quite striking, like a country home in it's own landscaped grounds with wings shooting off into the grounds with Sun Terraces at the end of each Ward. The Groundsmen and Maintenance Workers tied Cottages still stand on Langlands Road next to the old access road into the Hospital.

I thought the Elder Cottage Hospital was now a Care Home, it was after the Hospital closed but it could have changed use again. There is a block of Cottages opposite the Hospital which were Nurses Quarters which i think have now been refurbished into Housing Association Flats.

I was born in Oakbank Hospital in 1949.
Passed by recently and the site is occupied by 30ft+
mature trees.
As for me - I'm 5ft 8 tall and haven't matured at all!

I used to work with people moving out of Lennox Castle, got plenty of time to wonder round the estate. Not brave enough to try and look inside the old castle, but there were plenty of old kitchens, workshops, etc to wonder round away from the remaining wards. The old buildings used as the locked wards were still there and the people i was supporting could tell you some intersesting stories.
Well if we hit anything today, we'll hit it hard

Tell us more Flex. For example where did the folk who were in the locked wards go when Lennox Castle closed ?
I know there was a major shift to move other residents from there to the "community", I have met some of them through my job, living in Glasgow West end in supported accomodation. MY gut feeling, to be honest, is WHY were they placed there in the 1st place. The folk I have met seemed to have been disabled by tbeing institutionalised.
