The Glasgow Gigs

Postby neilmc » Sat Aug 11, 2007 12:54 pm

In 1981 my good friend Harry Longbaugh, who was the Glasgow and West of Scotland correspondent for Sounds, asked me to take some photos of bands he was reviewing. Lured by the offer of free drink and royalties, I took a self-taught crash course in available light photography, and I was ready. Here's a couple of the Q Tips playing Strathclyde university Union:-

I have, Schiehallion: I'm looking at a contact print I marked 'Glasgow Tech' but with no other details. I know one of the bands is the Delmontes, and I'll get the negs scanned in. We also interviewed the Cuban Heels in the Rock Garden, Queen Street, and I'll look those negs out.
Not in Glasgow, but the Bungalow Bar in Paisley was another venue we did; Defiant Pose is the only band I recognise. Watch this space.

Hazy, I wasn't a great fan of the Q Tips, but you'd better get the Cherry Blossom ready. The song was called Looking For Some Action, and if you've got £125 to spare, check this out:-

The 'Heels also appeared in Peter McDougall's TV play "Just A Boy's Game", in the pub/club scene at the start of the film. They played a version of the Stones' "Paint It Black"; then the fight broke out.....

Close-up of Joe (I think), necking a big Drybroughs screwtap - how punk rock is that?

That is some photo of the bottle Neil. :D

And an approximate date from the poster on the wall VG.

Not wishing to take over your topic Neil but here are a couple of photos of my band. In the first one taken in the Waterside July 1981 we were called the Optics.

The second is a poor quality one from the Burns Howff in West Regent St about 1980 when we went by the name of Knight Hunter.

Alex, I was hoping someone else would post their own photos, as I'm fast running out of my own material!

I originally scanned in the negatives as high-definition TIFF files, which can't be posted as such because of the sheer size of the files; however it does give you the chance to zoom in on detail like the beer bottle before converting to more manageable JPEGs.

Remind me: where was the Waterside; are you the drummer?

I don't need reminding of the Howff; an old stamping ground of mine, and the first pub I was ever in (1972, a wee bit under-age). We were there to see Northwind, whom we then booked for our 6th-year school dance at Craigbank. Great days, and to think you were actually on that same stage.....
