Seriously though, what makes St Peter's any more worthy than the multitude of "classic" buildings that have been dispatched in the name of progress? From a design perspective it always reminds me of the Plaza Car Park in East Kilbride and I doubt many will shed a tear when
that finally returns to dust.
As I said previously, I just don't "get" the high esteem that GKC designs are held in. To me many of their designs are redolent of the
nadir of Scottish architecture that was the 1960s.
I know you meant this as a defence of GKC designs but it also illustrates
my point - I can't see any particular merit in any of those designs. I notice you didn't include
King's Park Secondary School or the
Our Lady and St Francis Annexe in Charlotte Street, two more from the GKC portfollio , neither of which could ever be described as attractive (imho anyway), indeed I'd go as far to say both are horrendous examples of 60s' design, despite the latter being described in one book as having "attractive street elevations".
::EDIT:: Having said all that, I suppose the same attitude was probably shown to many of the 18th and 19th century buildings that were razed in the name of progress around the time many of the GKC buildings pictured here were built, so maybe I
am starting to "get" it afterall
