Yes it is - it's a few years since I've been down there though so I wasn't sure if Christies was still there. Didn't they also used to have a place around where the Forge Retail Park is?

There was a scrap yard just on the left under the railway bridge, coming down from Parkhead Cross, if this is the one you mean.

Most of the "proper" scrappies are long gone, killed off by EU legislation and the rest will surely follow when the new "end of life" regulations are implemented, forcing car manufacturers to take responsibility for the disposal of all vehicles that they have produced.

The east end used to be great hunting ground for such places but the only one I've spotted with anything left in it recently was the one in Barrack St with the old truck in it.

There used to be quite a few round the Scotland Street area and a couple of big ones in Rutherglen but I would imagine these too will be long gone.

The challenge is on to find and photograph any remaining "old skool" scrapyards

Yes i know exactly what you mean about EU legislation killing off the old style scrappie. I bought a Ford Prefect about 6 years ago off the the scrappie that used to be in Tobago St. It might be time to start an "old cars spotted" section in the photo gallery.

That is a pity the sit up and beg was no longer there. The 40's car sounds very interesting.

I remember as lad (early 80s) finding an 1930s Morris Van in a field near my home. It was at the bottom of a steep hill, hard against a tree.Someone had painted "struck by lightning" and a date on the side.

Unfortunately the field it was in is now under the GSO just like the Hess crash site
