cathkin park

Postby glasgowgub » Tue Jun 22, 2004 9:31 pm

cathkin park is still there, pitch terraces and all, probably much the same as it was in 1976. when the club went bust in 1967 due to financial mismanagement by the board the main stand was demolished and the council took over. for once they didnt sell to the highest bidder, opting instead to turn the place into a public park. you can still see the terracing hidden amongst the shrubbery. you would have been better off staying there than watching gers v hearts anyway my friend :)

Take a look here for pictures.

Photos are his copyright. Would be impolite to post here directly without asking. Perhaps a link could be added to the Hampden page as this is certainly "Hidden Glasgow".

Simple to get to - on the east side of Cathcart Road about half a mile north of Hampden (ie. left hand side of road heading out of town, befor getting to Hampden.

Exit Crosshill station, turn right into Cathcart Road, and its about 100 yds along on your left. There is a 3rd lanark logo embedded in the pavement just at the entrance

Not far from Police station, top of Prospecthill Road and turn right.
Third Lanark Volunteer Rifles, playground of my youth we had a huge rope swing from thr roof of the main stand .I had an uncle who played for them, finished his career down south when they went into liquidation in 67
There was a Womans team playing there a few years ago, last time I was there it was getting used for dog walking/shiting.Queens park had the original ground there until it bought the land at Mount Florida to build the present day Hampden,I'm sure ther are plenty of refrences to the 'HI HI'as they were known in the football Museum at Hampden Park.Well worth a vist.

Yes, This place definately still exists. My parents house practically looks on to it !. The local bad boys are known to steal cars and run them around down there until they run out of petrol then torch them.

AFAIK, it's still used for Sunday League football.

When I went there, I entered from the back, as I wasn't sure where it was. So I entered from the back of the terracing. looking down to the pitch. It felt REALLY eerie. Bear in mind this place might have had more than ten thousand people there at one point, and it was empty.

I've got a couple of pics from when it had only just closed down. I'll get them scanned and post them. Interestingly, the barriers on the terracing look different to when they closed. Most Squared, looked wooden rather than the metal ones they are now.

As a completely useless fact, the seats from the stand were sold to Albion Rovers, and are still at Cliftonville stadium. Although, Cliftonville's going to be sold for housing, so they won't be there much longer...

So that's why they call it the San Siro then!!! heh heh heh! Sayin' that, it's sad to here they're selling the ground for flats. Are Albion Rovers building another stand anywhere, or groundsharing? (you can tell i'm not into the fitbaw...)
