Strathclyde University Big Band is one of only a few long-standing University-based big bands in Britain, and has established a reputation for developing young talent and playing varied, interesting and challenging music. It was founded in October 1978 by three academics, namely John Davies (who is still the Band's conductor), John Parkes (who is still the Band's secretary and a member of the trumpet section) and Phil Nicholson (who left the Band to form his own small group which still plays on the Glasgow pub scene). The Band's Members are mostly current or former students and staff of the University, together with a few enthusiastic friends from outwith the University. Its extensive repertoire is jazz-orientated and includes arrangements of jazz standards, as well as charts from the repertoires of the Boss Brass, Buddy Rich, Woody Herman, Bob Mintzer, Thad Jones, Maynard Ferguson, Count Basie, Stan Kenton, Gil Evans, Toshiko Akiyoshi and Shorty Rogers.
A vagabond on the way.
