For a businessman, Mr Barton wasn't very good at counting.

Fantastic stuff, cheers for sharing this! I had no idea about this tunnel or the history of Schipka Pass as there's virtually nothing on-line about it! In fact, I think you've just made HG the definitive on-line resource on Schipka Pass! ::): Wonder how much of it lies behind the stonework blocking the arch? Not a lot I suppose.

Never knew about the proposed road north of Gallowgate (that would have relegated the ancient road to a minor street!) either!

Thankyou for making HG that bit more interesting today :D
here i go, it's coming for me through the trees

My apologies, Sydney. Let me take this moment to assure you that your house would be spared.

Okay, I might have worded my original blitzkrieg proposal badly. Can we at least agree that a good part of the Schipka Pass area and surrounds could do with 'something' being done to it?

This is incredible work everybody.
The maps alone are a major achievement I think. Well done!
This is the best subject there's been on here for ages.

Hi Brian,
sitting in snowy /wintery Canada I love the article done on Schipka Pass. The time and research is your own but the history belongs to all of us born in Glasgow and was appreciated by me, anyhow.
I have a pet project that I am going to start (someday in the near future)and you with your knowledge of Glasgow may be of assistance to me in your travels.
My hobby is The Great War history and one fact that keeps croping up is that over 127.000 Scotsmen lost their lives in the Great War. If you take the population of Scotland in 1914 appx 5.000.000, say half female so down to 2.500.000, then the young and the aged, maybe down another50% so that leaves 1.250.000 men. Then take the guys in industry/farming/fishing what does that leave?
Only thing that I can conclude is that if you where a Scotsman in that time period 1914/18 during the Great War your life expectancy in the forces was minimal and that does not include being injured.
No wonder Winston Churchill said:
"The only thing wrong with Scotsmen is there is not enough of them"
Great work Brian.
Hugh.

Hi Pete (alias Hugh U Kidden) thanks for your comments, and congrats on your first post (no longer a vigrin now) I know you have a special interest in the great war, especially relating to Glasgow. So why not start a special thread related to that. As the rules say, do a Search first and if you cant find what you are looking for, then start your own thread on the subject and lots of people with a similar interest will home in and contribute. Regards, Brian C. :D
