Railway station at Celtic Park

Postby germistonguy » Sat Aug 21, 2004 12:18 am

Thought this might interest any Glasgow railway buffs

From the BBC fans forum (RE when will Celtic Park be completed)

....oddly, the fifth and final stage was reopening the old railway line running up from dalmarnock direction and building a train station outside the stadium.....

I thought there was a station that served it already, but only a walk away??

That was a plan floated by Fergus 'The Bunnet' McCann when he gained
control of the club in 1994 and (rightly) punted Brian Dempsey and his
self-serving plan to relocate Celtic FC to Robroyston into touch. The plan was
to open the old freight line from Rutherglen up to the south side of London
Road just outside the stadium and have matchday specials. The photo
below is from 1984 and shows the formation of the line, with the long-gone
bridge over London Road still in place.

There was an actual Parkhead Stadium station to the easy of the ground.
It was part of the line which branched off at the current Bridgeton Station
and headed under London Road towards the ground before reappearing
just before it reached Springfield Road. More on it here:

I remember that big grassy slope at the Rangers end. Seen a few fellow bears fall down that in my time.

Would have made alot of scense to open a station there I'de have thought though. Would have encouraged more drivers to leave the car at home, thus not filling the car parks of the Forge letting people who are out shopping get a space!!
If no body's perfect, why practise?
