See the coat on the shakey peg. Thats your coat.

The Admin control panel allows everything from deletion of a single account to blocking of IP addresses in ranges if need be. It's quite impressive in reality.

There's a mix up with IPs.

Your ip address is associated with a particular internet provider, who I presume allocates it dynamically, i.e. you get a different one from their range of addresses every time you log on.

Curiously, the one you posted from has been used by no less than six different HG members, three of whom I've never heard of (before my time, only one or two posts, etc) and two of whom I know for a fact aren't you. :)

I don't know which one is banned, btw, before you ask.

Doesn't this just demonstrate the stupidity of those, on other fora, who scream for IP addresses to be banned?

An IP address which has been used by no less than six different HG members could easily be an internet cafe or Glasgow Libraries.

An IP ban while not perfect is the only way to stop someone banned from reregistering and continuing to be a problem - this unfortunately exposes the weakness.

And none of the 6 other posters Josef mentioned have been banned! - if it gets to be a MUCH more frequent problem I can have a look and see if i can work out where the problem lies.

Does banning an IP address prevent someone banned from reregistering and continuing to be a problem? If you (can?) ban their domestic IP address what's to prevent them re-registering from their local library or easy cafe?

yes.

Nothing to stop them going elsewhere, but how many folks (troublemakers or spammers) can REALLY be fucked doing that?

NTL and now virgin are notoriously bad for shared IP addresses in glasgow, i found out my neighbours address is the same as mine.

Most ntl IP address in and around Glasgow resolve to the old ntl core router facility at Braehead. That's probably why, if a forum admin 'bans' an IP address, they also ban loadsa potential users even if they only manage to ban a very few actual users of the forum - so they rarely get complaints.
