What happened to HG!!????

Postby Sharon » Fri Dec 09, 2005 2:24 pm

Well we were hacked yesterday...

After much effort we are now back though, well the forums are anyway!!

They might not look pretty... but they work and theres been no loss of data.

Phew! managed to say that without a single curse!

It was more that phpbb was a target, not HG.

Who knows why....Maybe hackers play the numbers game .. see who can hack the most sites.

*sigh*

It was some dick called pakbrain, or someone using one of his exploits. Go give him a piece of your mind at irc.gigachat.net #WHACKERZ if you feel so inclined.

Well done for getting it back up so quickly! And thank god for regualr back-ups. Another site I frequent was hit recently and lost 6 months worth of postings. The guy who ran it just assumed that his hosting company did nightly tapes... Bad mistake to make!
Anyhow, thanks Sharon.

just a word of advice from experience with another board i was on - these hackers often set up their own admin accounts so that when you've restored everything, they come in and change it all again and sometimes even delete the original admin accounts so you cant access the backend.d

I just went looking for the name they usually use (cos its usually a variation of a theme) but the post it was in has since been deleted. GRRR.

I'm sure you're already doing this but just incase, perhaps you should have a few admin accounts you can fall back on. Sometimes it helps to change the usertitle thing from admin to something entirely different so a hacker (cos lets face it theyre not exactly future microsoft employees that hack phpBB) wont know about it.
