Dead boat

Postby Lone Groover » Wed Aug 15, 2007 4:42 pm

Taken just past Bowling Basin. A passing local tells me this was towed here as a restoration project, sank and was beached to get it out of the way, the new owner scarpered without a backward glance.

Took this at the Garden Festival, 1988. This frigate can be seen in the background in several photos in the Garden Festival thread; here it is in full:-

As well as the Finnieston Crane, note the building now known as Skypark, as it originally looked.

Queen Mary

Postby edowds » Sun Aug 19, 2007 8:25 pm

The Cunard's Queen Mary was to be called Queen Victoria, at the time of being built Cunard informed the King, George V, that the ship was to be named after Britains greatest queen (i.e. Victoria) but the king replied "Good, my wife (i.e. Mary) will be honoured!" So Cunard had to change the name which was a problem as there was already a Clyde steamer named Queen Mary so that was changed to Queen Mary 2 in order to make the name available.

Went on a primary school trip on her sometime in the mid to late 1970's to Rothesay from Anderston Quay but I'm sure she had two funnels like the Waverley?

How her elegant stern looked back in the day

now a floating bar- restaurant and reduced to this nauseating colour scheme as she ends her days on the Thames at Waterloo Bridge

How Ironic the twin funnels are now restored but it's painted in such a brutal way? It' be better if she just sank on her mooring and spared her the indignity.

The old QM was indded painted yon horrible blue but was back in old Caley colours last time I saw her. She indeed did have two funnels when built but all the times I saw her from the fifties till she retired it ws just the one.

This is the only vessel here at the moment apart from a similar ship in the dock. Wonder where the three brunei corvettes went.
