It is indeed, in the west end. Snapped a couple of weeks ago.

I have this set as a wallpaper on one of my machines. Supersize scary bug. Let me know if you want a copy in your screen size.

That's very nice indeed, Brigit.

In considerably more mundane fashion, Paisley.

Tis wondrous indeed Bridge .. one thing my box brownie is sorely lacking in is a good macro facility.

And Josef, mundane my bahookie. Great colour set and jaunty angle makes a very interesting shot my friend.

That's in a rule book somewhere .. and if it isn't it bloomin' should be.

Thank you, gentlemen. :)

Mine too. That shot was taken from about ten feet away with a 300mm telephoto lens. If I'd tried with a normal macro, I'd have had to get up close and the damsel fly would have bugged off before I could take the shot.

I like the subtle shades in your shot, Josef.

Thats true about macro lenses Brigit, murder. I've tried so many times , and those lenses lose the focus when moved a tiny bit...so much hard work. I hadn't thought of using a big zoom , looks well worth while now I see your shot.

You'll have the same problem with the telephoto lens: it has a very narrow depth of field at its closest focus. As you can see, it's only the bug's eyes that are in focus in they're not much more than a millimetre or two across.

I bring my left hand up towards my right shoulder and rest the lens in the crook of my left elbow. The lens is already focussed and all I have to do is move slowly back and forward until the eyes are in focus and then take the shot. It is very important not to make sudden movements as insects like this (and butterflies too) are sensitive to sudden changes. This also applies to clouds going across the sun and I've lost a few shots just because the bug thinks the cloud is about to descend on it for lunch.
