@MacotheIsles and Fireman

I’m fairly certain the Vauxhall tourer is earlier – most likely a 1922 M Type Vauxhall 14-40 Princeton Tourer.

The car shown has disc wheels. Wire wheels were not introduced until 1924 when the model was re-designated the 14-40LM. Production ceased in 1927 and no further similar models were manufactured by Vauxhall, which in 1925 was taken over by General Motors.

As for the Shanks & McEwan truck. I’m sure it’s not a Bedford. The rake of the windscreen and the sweep of the front wings suggest to me American manufacture, and I can’t find anything identical on t’internet, but I think it may be a Chevrolet.

Hope this is helpful – bring the rest on please ????

Colmar - Thanks very much indeed. You have a very impressive knowledge of car history. I'm dating some of these photos by peripheral clues: for example if I know who the people are; the clothing; location; etc, so it's good to get some input of a more technical nature.

Will get some more pics up as soon as I can. All of the photos need to be cleaned up, calibrated, sharpened and so on to a greater or lesser degree - plus I have some paintings to do as well - but I'm really enjoying feedback such as yours on the pics I put up here. Next one will likely be another American vehicle, which, helpfully, includes the date (1928) on the number plate. A friend also said it has what is known as 'artillery' wheels. Will try and get that done today at some stage.

Many thanks.

Decided to post this one 'as-is'. Probably won't be using it. Obviously another American vehicle and the date on the number plate is 1928. Location: Detroit. The car has a symbol on top of the radiator, under what I believe is a temperature gauge, but I can't make out any name.

Well MacotheIsles – I do like a challenge and this one was no exception.

I’m fairly sure this is one of the smaller 4 cylinder Chrysler models carried over from 1925 when Chrysler bought out the ailing Maxwell Motor Company. I’m going to plump for a 1926 Model 58.

The 1928 registration plate does not indicate the year of manufacture or first registration of the car. Michigan state required car owners to purchase new registration plates each year.

And the object above the winged radiator emblem is indeed a temperature gauge.

Never mind the car, Joe wants to know who the comely gal is.
"I before E, except after C" works in most cases but there are exceptions.

Colmar. Well done, a forensic bit of automobiliac analysis there and I do appreciate it. There must be an almost infinite number of makes, models, and tweaks of automobile now, allowing that you're going back almost 100 years with vehicles like that. Story behind the picture (which also answers Joe St. Clair's question) is that my great aunt (pictured) and her husband moved to America back in the 20s, founded a steel company in Detroit and - I have no doubt - did pretty well. They used to come back over here on cruise liners most summers in the early sixties. I believe there is a vast sept of the 'Isles clan still going strong over there.

In that case Mac, I owe you a sincere apology. I have, completely unwittingly, slagged off your great Aunt.

Me and my big mouth !!!!!!

MacotheIsles wrote:Thanks Fireman. As a matter of interest the pic was taken in Detroit where I believe there may have been a car factory. Chevrolet's one of the very few American brands I've heard of so I'll go with that.

This one below is closer to home. Shanks & McEwan truck at Carnbroe and I'm estimating the date as late 1940s. Is this a Bedford?

(This image scanned at high res and cleaned up. The full res. version should be good to print at fairly large sizes)

That's actually a Ford/Fordson Model 51: an American design (Ford), though this one was probably built at Dagenham (Fordson).

Here's another Glasgow-operated American truck of the same era: an REO Speed Wagon (yes, I know...).

This was at the Kemble Air Show a few years ago. I think it travels round them all.

neilmc ...

Thank you very much for that info. I Can't Fight the Feeling that you're bang on with your information there. I just wish that old truck was Back on The Road Again. Only in my Dreams I suppose.
