This line is in Motherwell. It was built on top of an old mineral railway in 1963/64 to serve Ravenscraig Steel Works. It was used - primarily - to carry strip steel rolls from the plant to Mossend Yard, for it's journey south. At one ime it was a through line, connecting with the WCML at Shieldmuir and diverted freight trains would use it when the main lines were closed.
The line closed in 1992 just a few weeks after the works ceased production. In '94 BR recovered the useful track and relaid it with light rail. I'm not sure why thet relaid it because it was never used again - maybe they'd hoped to get the contract for carying away the demolished plant; or possibly something to do with the development of the site.
Anyway - it has gradually reverted to nature over the last 12 years and it's quite a pleasant walk - although it's no more than a mile long from its sudden end in the mud of the old Ravenscraig site to it's disconnected junction with the line at Mossend.
Here's a photo taken circa 1914 of my grandfather in his porter's uniform. I think it's Holytown Station and the train would've been working the line from Holytown, through Omoa, Morningside, Hartwood, etc.
