Doorstop wrote:"Fire! Fire!" said Mrs. McGuire,

"Wher! Wher!" said Mrs. Blair,

"Up the Toon" said Mrs. Broon,

"Goodness Gracious, Ah never knew herring wis fish!"

*EDIT* "Goodness Gracious" said Mrs Mc Davis; "Ah never knew herring was fish!"

I've only ever known the last line of that little ditty - now it all makes sense. Not very profound for my first post I suppose..

Shit, I do hope that's not the old Odeon...

Springfield Quay, allegedly.

Might still be a cinema, though.

Yeah, looks like the old tenement on Paisley Rd West next to the Quay - so almost an Odeon!:

Ah. Every time I've passed that building in the last three or four years, I've wondered how long it would be before it 'went on fire' in good old Glasgow property-development style. Now I know.

I hope that at least it doesn't take the adjacent ex-Library down with it.

From Viceroy's post on the Lost Gardens... thread.

The unfortunate victim is on the right-centre (I think, from reports).

Here, come to think of it, I suppose if I were Mr Plod then I might be mildly suspicious about the fact that yesterday the wummin at the end of that link was posting pictures of fire jugglers, and today she's first on the scene of a major conflagration. Perhaps I've just been a mod too long..

Given there were great blooming trees growing out of the windows, I don't think it was ever going to get renovated. Anyone know anything about the pub on the ground floor? Sapphire Bar or something? Presumably it was once packed with thirsty dockers from the quays.

The Sapphire Club according to various news reports. This fits with the exposed 'L' in the photographs.

From the Doon Archives, 23rd July 2008. Both buildings caught my eye at the time as they looked like they had potential...

...for going on fire, unfortunately, as it turns out. :(
