Thank you - all credit to the sculptor though for capturing the personality of the man. The statue - which I think is as receent as 1996 - is of Lt Colonel Blair Mayne, who died in 1955. Along with David Stirling and Jock Lewes he is credited with being one of the founders of the SAS Regiment. Of those three - often referred to as The Dreamer, the Planner and the Fighter - he was The Fighter. His portrait is in the sergeants' mess at Credenhill (so I have read) to this very day. Very worthwhile reading books such as 'Rogue Warrior of the SAS' and. 'Paddy Mayne' for details of his exploits in WWII and his DSO, 3 Bars. Newtownards, incidentally, is in Co. Down.
