Continuing the strangely rude Xmas theme:

An oddity, but in the nicest possible way. This is a pic of a puppet version of The Pavillion taken in July 1982, Motherwell Town Centre. As I remember it was a tribute to the great acts that performed in the theatre and there were puppets of (I think) Jack Milroy, Una McLean, etc, though I can't be sure of the identities now. The fella who created it used to unpack it and set up in town centres, operating the puppets on stage to backing tracks of Scottish songs. It was a cheery wee ruby-red gem of an affair, with a great deal of loving care and affection put into it; more power to his puppet-pulling elbow. Haven't seen or heard of him for years unfortunately. Wish I'd taken the time to ask him more about it, but there you go.

Ladies and gentlemen. One last time...

Was he bearded? In which case that might well have been Gordon. He used to work on the annual pantomime at Motherwell Civic Centre around that time, as well as running a puppet workshop or theatre somewhere in the West End.

Josef...

He might have had a beard - can't remember for sure. In my mind had a bit of the Jack Milroy about him - and kind of small and lightly built with it as I remember. I may well have taken a few shots of him too but if I did they haven't come to light yet.

Seems to me that little eccentric attractions like this puppet theatre were very much of that more innocent time, or even earlier years. Just couldn't see it now, although maybe that's just me getting old and nostalgic.

Another 'not-really-an-oddity' - more of a 'something-you-don't-see-every-day'. Hasten to add that to the best of my memory nobody was too badly hurt in this crash. The date is May 1987 and the place is Motherwell Station. On an exceptionally hot day some pointwork had buckled, causing the train to derail after the loco and leading coach(es) had passed over the fault. Speed was approx. 80 mph so it could've been quite bad, but I think there was only one broken leg and numerous bumps and bruises: thankfully no fatalities.
