Newton Street, Partick

Postby Liamod » Thu Jan 19, 2006 5:43 pm

I am looking for any information about Newton Street in Partick. Ideally, I would like to find a photograph of it before it was demolished, in the late sixties I understand.
My grandparents lived there at the beginning of the 20th Century, and I am looking for evidence about their lives.
Their names were, Michael and Mary ( nee Hughes ) Dempsey.
How good is this forum?

Partick? there's still what little is left of Newton Street at Charing X. Is/ was there one in Partick?

The Mitchell Vitrual Library has a photo.

The link is http://www.mitchelllibrary.org/cgi-bin/ ... =Newton+St

Could you mean Newton Place?

Partick South Church (the modern building near the library) used to be known as Newton Place Church.

Probably not. Newton Street in Partick was renamed Dunaskin Street. Go to the Mitchell Library and browse through their photographic collection (Dunaskin Street isn't listed in the Virtual Mitchell).

THAT's how good this forum is!

Out of curiosity, how old is that map?

Is the football ground on the north of the Clyde on the left hand side down at Meadowside, and the old Partick Thistle ground? No idea if the map is old enough to show that though. If not, forgive my stupidness!

The Subway's in it, so it's no earlier than 1896. I think most of the street renaming took place in the early 1920's ?

The football ground is Ibrox, south of the Clyde. The original Thistle ground was on the Granery site.

St Enoch station looks as if it hasn't been expanded (1902) and Cumberland Street station exists (1901). So I would date the map as possibly 1902, certainly not later than 1905 as Bridge street station is shown and this was closed 1905

I wonder did you ever find that photo of Newton St, Partick? My folks lived there from before my great grandparents married in 1887 when they moved in with my great great grandmother, who was already in situ. My grandfather Patrick Tinney was born in Newton St in 1895. They lived in No.25. Thanks in anticipation
