Converting to Mono

What technique do you use to convert colour digital images to mono? Desaturate? Channel mixer? Something else?

What do you think gives the best results?

Channel mixer. There's the very rare occasion where I'll just use a single channel as-is, but the vast majority of the time I'll use the channel mixer.

If I thought there were another method that gave better results, I'd use that instead.
