Dark v light is a hell of a balancing act. I must hold my hand up and say I've got bugger all experience with film, but aye, everything I read says that it handles contrast far better than digital. As far as digital goes, I gather dynamic range has tended to improve over time - and all the rumours are true, shooting in RAW does help a lot.

I'm happy to be corrected by others, but faced with a scene like this using digital (whatever the camera) I'd tend to set the exposure (by trial and error using the histogram) to suit the brighter areas, and try to lighten the shadows a bit when it's on the computer, rather than the other way around. Or take several versions of the same shot with different exposures in hope that one of them hits the mark. (One major advantage of digital of course - a shot costs pretty much nothing.)
All the world seems in tune on a Spring afternoon, when we're poisoning pigeons in the park.

Scott - thanks for the guide and thanks for the Lightroom videos - I have been stumbling around Lightroom for a few months and thought that I had a fair grasp of it's workings , but I now know otherwise :o .
Are the videos available for HQ download?

Good luck in the campaign to have Lightroom adopted by your society.

Most of what I learned came from the brain of another guy who doesn't post on here so I can't acknowledge him properly, with some clarification from the Glasgow Met's "Photography: Camera Techniques" Saturday morning course. I'd definitely recommend it if you've got 3 hours spare for 10 weeks - it runs on a weekday night too - especially since ILA Scotland will pay for it (minus £10) if you meet their criteria!.

I got back into my photography after doing an access course at Glasgow Met, with a tutor called Ronnie, ( part time airline worker, but great guy) I keep on thinking about going back for one off these Saturday courses, but the details online put me off. I get lots of photo mags and learn stuff like ISOs and that but i dont know if the stuff would be too simple or too hard for me. And it seems by the way they are worded that they want you to start at the begining and do like 5 or 6 courses in a row.
Its always good to learn things when someone shows you but dont fancy the whole class room sit down and write learning outcomes etc

That's an amazing photograph, Engineer - thanks for posting the link. I liked the personal angle on the story along with it, too.
