Is it artistic merit, subject, atmospere, something indefinable ?
Personally, it's atmospere more than anything, but I would lean more towards the indefinable. I see a photo I like, but I often can't explain why.

Yes, I would lean toward the indefinable too, just something that strikes a personal chord perhaps? Or stirs memories, or feelings, or just says something to you.

A photograph can capture a moment in time... they are a memory or a gateway to the past.

Second that, totally agree.

Difficult to say - different photographs appeal for different reasons, so here a few (a very few) of those from HG that I have found inspirational

There are loads of others here on HG that I think are brilliant but some of these here are responsible for me going out and buying a camera in the first place!

This is a question i have never even considered before now.
Beauty i cant say really comes into it...Location perhaps
Subject matter probably. Whilst a Pro will capture the image
Picture perfect i lean more towards the flawed Photograph.
Where the light is not quite right the composition is askew
Or the focus is just slightly off. If the image is captivating does it
Really matter. I think what i am trying to say is i like the honesty
In amateur Photo's rather than the polished turd of the pro.
Usually because thats what i take....Amateur photo's

As for snapping,
Well its what you see that others don't.
The angle, time of day, location, subject
Don't matter how shite or top end your camera is its the final result

I was pissed off when the bus passed.
But after downloading it
it turned out better than if i had set the shot up to be like that.

I've thought about this myself, and i'm no closer to figuring it out. I suppose I can only echo others and say part of it is capturing a moment. Often my favs are glimpses between buildings, or chance shots like Fossil's above.
I'll maybe post a couple of other favs, but it's so difficult to decide.

I think that's one of those "creative moments"

Atmosphere definitely makes a good photo. And the way a good picture can make the very mundane something else is amazing. I think for myself though, the thing that makes a photo special for me is catching a moment, particularly one the camera can see but our eyes can't cos we are just too damn slow.

Like a dog shaking the water of him....



or the contrails coming from the props of a de Havilland Dash 8....



or the moment a big lump of wood is thrown into a fire....whoosh...



The camera is a great tool for freezing time and that's what makes me go "wow" at a photo.

You need an eye for a good shot
