Does anyone know how much a second-hand hovercraft costs?

A bit more than a second hand boat. I hope that helps.

You need to have a pilots licence to operate a hovercraft

And my suggestion of a row boat was discounted as silly :(

I doubt you'll find many people to disagree with that HJ, here or otherwise. That's because folk are scared of change and don't like foresight, especially the type of foresight that might prove reasonable and sensible, worse yet the type of foresight that might get put into practice.

Sorry but a floating bus just does not look or feel right. I built all sorts of boats for 30yrs and I would not feel comfortable on such a vessel/vehicle. How stable? how durable. i mean the present ferry has a welded steel hull. Just how thick is the skin on the bus. I've been on a DUKW which although a similar idea wallowed all over in any swell.i just think anything on water should have a hull shape and characteristics of a boat.
It also seems very strange that the vehicle was rolled out so soon after the closure was announced. Did they hear a whiper long before us???.

i remember the Glasgow Ducks tried to set this kind of amphibus tour service during the 90s and did not last very long.

Fancy a drive/sail on the River Clyde?
The Glasgow Ducks are amphibious road and river vehicles which take tourists all over the city.
Glasgow Ducks spokeswoman Carol-Anne Latta says; 'The Ducks have been a great success since they started and as well as being popular with families, they have been a big hit with corporate clients. We are operating our winter schedule at the moment with trips at the weekends only but the boats are almost always full'

But that's a tourist gimmick much like I suggested the yellow amfibus could be on the big circle. Only thing is Glasgow doesn't have an uberbrand to ride off of.

You could get yourself one of these.
If you still want to travel by boat you could get the train from Yoker/Garscadden to Central and get the Clyde Waterbus.

This could also be a useful solution for crossing the Clyde.
