Provider and interpretation of historical data

Postby tenaciousd1971 » Wed Jan 13, 2010 11:56 am

Hi,

As this is my first post, hello to everybody.

A quick introduction of myself: I work as a self-employed environmental consultant and as such do desktop studies for large planning organizations and architects, which involves among other things, researching the history of sites which are earmarked for development / redevelopment. This research is carried out mostly at the Mitchell Library Map Room, inspecting and interpreting detailed Ordnance Survey maps, and sometimes the occasional trip through to the National Library of Scotland in Edinburgh. Most of the sites are in urban settings (Brownfield) and as such have a legacy of contamination issues from mostly arising from industries such as 'coal mining', 'iron works', 'brick works', 'gas works', etc...

Getting to the point of the topic, If you would like to know the history of where you or a friend / family live, or where you once lived, then drop a line to [email protected] indicating a place name and / or postcode and I shall endeavor to provide a textual history of the area in question.

regards.

Hi TD :)

So what's the catch?
All the world seems in tune on a Spring afternoon, when we're poisoning pigeons in the park.

Thanks for the +ve replies.

Especially Johnny Go-go, most welcome comments if a bit surreal! I think you have been drinking with your Avatar again 8O

HollowHorn, I am purely refering to the land condition at any given time in history. For example, take St. James Park, home of the mighty 'Toon' as an exampleof historical. I have done a bit of research previously and interpreted the following from the 1862 OS Map.

The 1862 1:10,560 scale map of Northumberland shows the area to the south east corner of 'Castle Leazes' as being open ground. This area would later be developed to become the home of Newcastle United Football Club.

that is the kind of information service I am offering.

Howdy, TD.

Thanks for making the offer. I've sent a message with my details to the email address you provided; hope that's OK.

I moved to the area I'm last June and don't know a lot about it, so it'd be interesting to read what you come up with.

Cheers!

Many thanks FraserM. I do hope my findings can be of some assistance to your research. Can I just ask, is it purely out of interest in the local history of your area in question, or do you have a strong family (genealogical) link with the area?

Just to let you know, my next visit to the Mitchell Library will be sometime next week, most likely tuesday or wednesday. I trust the delay will not hinder you too much.

Kind regards

Yup, nothing more than an interest in the local history. My Da's family are from Whiteinch and my Ma's side are from Thornliebank, via Shotts. They stay at Hogganfield now which, AFAIK, used to be rhubarb fields.

Thanks again for the offer - absolutely no sweat about the timing.
