West End Protest Camp

Wondered about posting these under the 'Signs' thread but thought they probably deserved a thread of their own - anyone else spotted the folk camping out in the derelict space between Gibson St/Otago Lane to protest about the flats to be built on the site?

Lots of nice signs when I passed this morning:

You can just about make out one of the tents in the last pic; the area is quite overgrown though.

I have some sympathy with them - especially as the new flats they want to build look revolting & entirely out of keeping with their surroundings - but the site is only open space because an exisiting tenement was demolished there years ago because of (I think) subsidence - I'm surprised the site has lain unbuilt on for so long!

Is that the area just down from the Tchai-Ovna tearoom? I'd hope they leave it alone... Any links to images of what they want to build there?

Thats the place, yes.

Can't find a photo of the development online, but it is described here:
http://www.eveningtimes.co.uk/hi/news/5027809.html
as
"block of brightly-coloured flats"
"22 luxury, green-clad flats - with a restaurant and underground parking"
"Developer CPD is behind the ultra-modern plans, which are similar to The Matrix development in Cowcaddens. "

Sounds lovely....

Well, they'd better not be wearing shorts because they're camped in a big patch of chinese hogweed, which can give a really nasty rash if you touch it in sunlight.

Stinkpad.
