You're right Dex: I don't know what good modern black music is, that's why I posted in the first place. However, of those I mentioned - Marvin ( What's Going On 1971/Let's get It On 1973) Stevie Wonder (Talking Book 1972, Innervisions 1973; Hotter Than July 1980) and my faves, the Isley Brothers ( 3x3 1973) didn't do too badly after 1970 while many of the others were either dead or not feeling too good.
As you know, I was lucky enough to see Ray Charles - where's his equivalent ? - twice in one week in New York in 1992 and left, both times, feeling that I'd seen something unique.
I bow to your love and knowledge of black music, I'm a wee bit worried that the modern day version has become formulaic and unoriginal.
I'll have a listen to your suggestions, thanks.

There's not an original lick in any of these but to my ears this is superb stuff.

I never thought when i created this thread it would end up being so educational.Cheers to all the folk who have named bands that i'd either never heard of or just plain forgotten. My rapidshare account has taken a battering this afternoon nice one.I still have my initial reservations though but there seems to be a thriving and much needed commercial injection into the Glasgow economy so i suppose to that end its a good thing.

Thanks Dex, your post led to my digging out the Mojo CD, "The New Dictionary of Soul" which features a few of these tracks. I went to see Paperboy Reed and James Hunter thanks to this excellent compiliation. As you say, not original but superb stuff, especially live.
I know it's a diferent genre but I saw Eliza Carthy last night at the Old Fruitmarket and she was wonderful. You could see her influences but like all greats she brings a large dollop of herself to the mix.
Her 4-piece band comprised herself on fiddle and melodian, a drummer, a cellist and a stand-up bass; everybody sang. I've never seen anything like it - which brings me back to my original post.

Promising future for musical medic
A fourth-year medical student at Glasgow has been signed by one of the music
industry's top record labels.
Emeli Sande was signed by Stellar Songs, a subsidiary label of the EMI music group, after
penning a track called Diamond Rings for the UK R'n'B star Chipmunk.
The song peaked at number 6 in the UK music charts and earned Email a
nomination for a MOBO music award in the Best Song category.
The MOBO awards are the biggest celebration of British urban music
and, although they were held in Glasgow this year, Email was the only
Scot to be nominated for an award.
Speaking about her recent success, Email said: 'I am over the
moon about the MOBO nomination and the record deal. However,
I am committed to finishing my degree. I'm really enjoying studying
medicine at Glasgow and the new term - although I do plan to take
a few evenings off to perform.'

MOBO’s return puts city music fans in a spin

18 Feb 2011

Glasgow is preparing to take centre stage once again as a major music awards show looks set to return to the city.
It is understood the Music of Black Origin (MOBO) event boss Kanya King is in talks to bring the awards show back to Glasgow ahead of the Commonwealth Games in 2014.
The show was last held in the city in 2009.
It is also hoped a long-term tie-up could be made, which would prove a major boost to the city’s economy.
Although the deal has not been formally signed yet, it is thought event organisers will make an announcement next month.
In reports today a MOBO insider is quoted as saying: “Kanya and her team are very keen to return to Scotland because they had such a brilliant time here two years ago.”
The MOBO awards were set up in 1996 to showcase British urban music, at a time when it was largely overlooked in the mainstream.
Before the 2009 show in Glasgow, the MOBOs had been staged in some of London’s most iconic venues.
Music stars Jermaine Jackson, JLS, N-Dubz and Tinchy Stryder were among those walking down the red carpet in Glasgow two years ago.
The show reached around 350million people around the world via TV, press and the internet and is thought to have brought in around £3.6 million in extra spending into Glasgow.

Well let's hope they all watched the last Brits Award and learned how not to do it. It's always been about music industry back slapping and back scratching.

Grtz,

Irritatingly the Emile Sande YouTube song/movie in the above earlier message is now 'private'.

>> ! <<

Remembering back a couple of years, I'm sure it was worth hearing again.

Any of you smart folks got a work-around that'll let it be heard once more?

Increasingly I find shortcomings (it's ma' ba') in the new internet frustrating, it'll likely only get worse.

Help appreciated,

MD

Mobos agree three-year Glasgow deal

The Mobo awards will take place in Glasgow in 2011, 2013 and 2015, organisers have announced.
Having taken place in the city in 2009, the event will be hosted this year's at the city's SECC arena on 5 October.
A host in the past, Alesha Dixon, and newcomer Yasmin helped launch the event, now in its 16th year.
Last year's show, held in Liverpool, saw JLS and Tinie Tempah top the winners list with two prizes each with N-Dubz winning best song.
Fans can register at the official website in order to buy tickets to the awards which recognise artists of any race or nationality performing black music.
Nominations will be revealed later this year
