Buttery Sugaries

Postby bobzee » Mon Aug 24, 2009 2:01 am

As the title says - buttery sugaries.

I remember when I was a nipper back in the '80s, whenever I had a sore throat, my dad would give me a wee ball of butter after rolling it around in the sugar bowl.

Can't remember if they actually helped though.

I was wondering if this was something my dad made up to shut us up, or has anyone else heard of them?

Google makes no mention of them.

My former wife got them, so the practice had spread as far as Kilmarnock.

I very occasionally got a a piece n sugar. Fucking revolting when I think of it now.

I've heard of a soap and sugar poultice for drawing boils to a head, but not bread and sugar.

Dicky, dipped bread - still a staple for the Sunday morning Draugelis family breakfast! That or eggy bread (or "French Toast" as it's known in the Giffnock G46) - absolute quality!! :D

Encountered butter/sugar only once when it was used instead of cream in a sponge cake baked by my mum, and I have to say it was the second most horrendous concoction ever to assault my palate. The very worst was an evil, slimy mixture called Scott's Emulsion which was emulsified codliver oil concentrated 10 billion times. This was administered to all unfortunate waifs and gamins of the 1960s at the onset of Autumn, to stave off respiratory infections.

We used to get the vinegar after the Vosene !

I think the idea was to give the nits nothing to hold onto, never had nits so it might well have been the case !
