There's a Hill in there Somewhere

Postby Hoey St » Tue Jun 29, 2004 7:53 pm

Maybe this one has come up before but just out of boredom and to give all the Hidden Glasgow pedants something to mull over the coming days. Being a city built on hills has anyone ever collated the number of areas within the city boundries which contain "hill" within its title. Nitshill, Priesthill, Govanhill etc.

Hampdenhill is an oft forgotten one.

So, Rome's built on only seven hills eh?

Ho! Ho! We've got the beating o' them!

If I can paraphrase the most famous bit of Scottish theatre criticism (and I think you'll find I can)
"Whaur's yer Romulus an' Remus Noo?"

PS. Funny Johnny Beattie Story (and it's not often you'll see those words together).
The erstwhile star of River City (Rosheen, eh? Has she had a stroke? "Ah waant yooooo tae gee ma awaa it ma waddin'" all spoken out the sides of her mouth) came out of Hillhead underground one day to find Byres road running with water as the result of a blocked stank. A wee bauchle turned to him and said
"Aye, whaur's yer Venice noo?"

PPS Even although it hasn't got hill in it's name, it is up a hill so...
Ever wonder whose idea it was to call it Castlemilk?
At some time in the distant past some cat in shining armour is cleaning the gore off his lance when he thinks "I'll build a castle up here! Wonderful views, clean air etc." He tells his mate who asks him, "What you gonna call it then?"
"Well," says our Knight, "I thought...Milk."

I can confirm Hillpark as I lived there for 25 years, and yes it is at the top of a hill.

Scottish Place Names, George Mackay wrote:Castlemilk (Glasgow) "Castle on the milky white stream". Chaisteil (Scottish Gaelic) 'castle'; Melg (old Irish Gaelic) 'milk'. This is one of the vast outer Glasgow housing development zones, often reffered tosimply as "the Milk".

Haghill, Hillington and Braehead (although not strictly part of Glasgow any more)
