Begging your assistance!

Postby Onyxia » Wed Jun 17, 2009 2:04 pm

I don't normaly do this but I'm desperate.

I am/was planning on getting married in Glasgow close to my fiances parents but my venue has let me down. Does anyone have any quirky ideas? It doesnt have to be a weddingy venue as such (in fact at this notice it would be better if it wasnt!) but it has to be able to provide food/facilities for caterers, have space for 90 people and serve good beer/allow us to bring it in. I think I have already looked at all the obvious ones as my google searches are now only coming back with things I have already seen.

At the moment my favourite back up plan is WEST Brewery but although Im sure everyone would enjoy I think it will just blur into every other party/random piss up we have ever had.

Gah I just want to create an event that people will remember. So frustrating being back at square 1 the moment I thought everything was under control!

PS. Dont even mention The Tall Ship to me. If I ever have to talk to their rude and useless staff again I think I may well have a moment of mouth foaming insanity.

How about The Annexe in Stewartville Street, Partick http://www.theannexehlc.org.uk

Good sized hall. KItchen/ cafe. They've allowed BYOB before.

Parking is shite.

Congratulations.

My first question would be; Are you having a civil wedding or religious ceremony?

Civil weddings ususally require the premises to be licensed for 'marriage'. You may identify somewhere and then find that the 'registrar' is not able to conduct the ceremony there. It is not a problem with a religious celebrant, ie. Priest or Minister. (Often they are a whole lot cheaper than the registrar and some can be very relaxed about your ceremony).

You would need to think about parking and access if that's an issue to be considered. I always think the best thing to do is to eliminate places that you wouldn't get married in. You've already indentified the Tall Ship as being one. Would you get married in 'Orange Halls, a pub, Masonic Halls, or a hotel?"

I would suggest that you define what you are looking for, create a top ten list and go through them. I normally help folks with situations like this as it happens more than you can imagine - so have a think through and then make your decision.
"Listen, it's too big a world to be in competition with everyone. The only person who I have to be better than is myself. And in your case, that's enough."

I'd second sloans bit of history and its lovely, catering, booze and a pub downstairs if you get fed up with the new family!

If you have a humanist ceremony you can get married anywhere, have your ceremony and "do" in sloans to save duplicate venue hire costs.

Oran Mor is very nice too, but quite expensive for what you get imho.

foss, you couldnt sort mine out for you could ye?

Thanks for your help!

I have looked into the Science museum but their website is so terrible that I cant get an idea of what the place is actually like. I wanted the science museum in London but its waaay over budget. Ive also looked at the transport mueseum and a load of art galleries but they all seem to use the same over priced morons as an event hosting company. I dont want to be messed about more than I already have.

Sloans looks amazing. Ive been there before but I never went upstairs. Clearly I missed out!

Right, organising a few days in Glasgow to try and fix this.

Hey,

I had mine at the Trades Hall - it was pretty nice, but not sure if they'd do it at short notice. You need caterers for there as well.

There's a venue list here: http://www.glasgow.gov.uk/NR/rdonlyres/ ... il2009.pdf

My wedding 'reception' was held in what was the veggie restaurant on Sauchiehall Street at the corner of Pitt Street. Total cost? About £20.
