Was on fire when passing this morning on the train.

Loosk like it had been damped down quite a bit, but there was still flames, and fire crews were still in attendance.

Can't imagine there could be any recovery for the lovely big old red thing. Shame I never got a look inside.

Such a pity...always found it a great Cinema, with its screen almost touchable from the front seats....will always remember seeing "How the West was Won" in full Cinerama, which used 3 projectors to show the widest, (at that time), images on screen.
Quite an experience at the time......
Watched the movie on Sky recently, never the same without its 'surround-vision'...same as the Elephant in Shawlands, the Colliseum was always a class act........sorry to see its demise...

Yup, the chippy hadn't long been done up, was called Mr T's.

Looks like the building's a goner, roof is gone, sidewalls are bulging, the revolving sign on the tower is gone, and the burnt cladding on the facade makes it look like the sandstone frontage underneath is gonna be pretty much cream crackered.

It had been fairly mucked about with over time, was originally a very smart theatre inside with two balconies, before being altered a bit to become a full-time cinema in the 1920s. It was then fairly radically altered again in the 60s, including a new interior and the removal of the upper balcony to become a Cinerama theatre, and yet again in the mid-80s to be converted to bingo - fuller history here:

Will be interesting to see if this is demolished in the same manner as the Shack was after its fire. IE very bloody quickly.

Even though it was derelict, its mass made for an interesting streetscape. If it goes, coupled with the demolition of the flats along the road, the area is in danger of turning into a wasteland. It is quite depressing travelling along that stretch, from Butterboggins road to bridge street right now.

methinks the building will be demolished and mr ts will survive as a stand alone establishment.

If a building "went on fire" that the council was not quite happy to see "go on fire", you can bet there would be all sorts of criminal investigations, probably involving anti-terrorism legislation.

only if there was loss of life. The police have got better things to do than try and catch ex squaddies.
