I worked up there quite a bit last year driving dumpers and as some one said, these turbines are massive. You really do have to be right under one to get an idea of their size, but to get a real idea, you have to see them lying lengthwise on the ground before they get erected. It's a huge site with hundred of kilometres of roads.

Apparently, the turbines only have a lifespan of 20 years, basically because the foundations wont last any longer. The foundations are really deep and strong but the pull of the turbines must be huge.

For anyone interested, the health and safety up there was a fucking joke. You could get put off of the site for not wearing a hard hat, but I was expected to reverse an overladen dump truck down 1 in 4 (or steeper) gradients and to tip on an uneven surface with the risk of toppling the truck, without benefit of a banksman to guide me. When there was a banksman, it was usually some mental old alkie who wasn't qualified or competent.

I remember reading that some precautions had to be taken to ensure that the windfarm did not interfere with radar for air traffic approaching Glasgow Airport, recently I have noticed that the rainfall radar image provided by the Met Office http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/uk/radar/index.html always seems to show precipitation in the area of the windfarm, even when the sky above in Eaglesham is clear, must be a similar effect.
(Check the screen on a day when there is no rain in the west of Scotland - O.K. I know that this is an unusual occurrence!!)

Amlaird water works, on the other side of Whitelee Forest, is officially the wettest part of Ayrshire - I lived in Waterside and can vouch for that. I remember the year of Chernobyl, it rained every single day that summer.

Apart from the scale, I really like the wee tiny door and figure with the thing itself looming up into the mist.

Excellent.
