had a bit of a walk round Motherwell at the weekend. two observations:
- lots of disused industrial buildings, could be good for exploring
- the town centre is a bit of a dive

The Dalzell Steelworks is not disused. I understand that it will be closing within the next two years, though. That night club was called "Faces" and it burned down about five years ago; there is very little left inside.

Motherwell in general is a complete shite hole, and I had the misfortune to work there every day for a year. You are right, though; there are a lot of disused industrial buildings. I can't quite remember where they are though, but when I come back next month perhaps I will go and have a better poke around.

I really wish I was into UE before they blew up the Ravenscraig.

Faces nightclub!!!

I remember one winters evening back in 1990 getting huckled by the Police there for using a sledge on the snow.... well, getting towed by an old metro at two in the morning whilst trying to stand up on a sledge isn't the brightest thing to do after an evening of dancing and frivolity!!!

Then again, I was drunk and seventeen!

Ah memories.......

Hey! I live in Motherwell! No, your right it is a complete shit hole.

The nightclub Faces, we used to call it "Faeces" because it was, you guessed it, shite. Insurance job of course.

Strangely enough I've never consider Motherwell interesting enough to take photos of (I always go into Glasgow) but maybe I should document my home town...

There's some good stuff worth photographing if you look really, really hard.

Maybe we should have a we HG tour of Motherwell? We could try and get onto the Heritage Centre Tower!

As for Ravenscraig, it's weird driving through it. There's a load of flattened rubble on each side of you as you drive through, with the old vaguely recognisable bit of stone or rusted metal. Not sure if any of it came from the 'Craig, or if it was just dumped there, though...

Great town my arse. It's a dump. Wishaw isn't much better.

And don't get me started on Coatbridge...took me sixteen years to leave the place. Every time I go back I remember how shit it is.

Still, Coia's Central Cafe on the main street might be worth a look inside, if only there wasn't apparently someone living on the top floor......

No, I'm just emphasising a word. I wouldn't bother with trying to be sarcastic in text, it's very easy to be misunderstood.

Coatbridge, Wishaw, Motherwell, Hamilton...
All these Lanarkshire towns have in common that their councils have blown up, demolished or concreted over anything that their towns ever had to offer the visitor or the architectural enthusiast.

When I lived in Hamilton I once looked it up in a Scottish guide book and it said
"A rare example of an attractive industrial town"
I'll bet it disnae say that any longer.

Wishaw! It's possible to get depressed just driving through it!

I could never quite see the point of Motherwell but a few years ago it came tops in one of those "best place to live" surveys. I'll bet that raised a few eyebrows round Windmillhill street way.

I used to work in Coatbridge. There are some nice bits actually but they're few and far between. Airdrie is another Wishaw as far as I'm concerned and ever been to Caldercruix? Ho! Ho!
