Cathcart Circle

Postby Bex Bissell » Fri Jun 18, 2004 2:59 pm

I am looking for info on a book that was published perhaps 4-5 years ago about the Cathcart Circle railway.
I've done a search on the Evening Times site as they reviewed the book but came up with nothing.
It tells the story of the building of the line and how it transformed much of the south side along with stories built up around it.
Apparently there was a brutal murder of a ticket office attendant at Pollokshields East and the mystery surrounding it, also stories of how would be suitors would use the line as a place to court the well healed ladies of Maxwell Park and Pollokshields.
I also know of a story about a train guard found dead in his compartment after choking on his own vomit, that may be more recent than I think...
I'm sure it was written by a woman called Aileen and she may have written a book about Glasgow and surrounding villages but cant be sure.
I know its all a bit vague.
Oh, the humanity!

How come Cathcart Circle trains are orange and black with white details, I only ask because this is almost exactly the same colours as CIE trains in Ireland?

That livery, officially known as Strathclyde Transport Red(!), used to be carried by just about all trains and buses operating in the SPT area. Most Subway trains are still orange. The orange buses are long gone now and most trains have since been repainted into the current carmine/cream livery, but there are a handful of older trains (1970s class 314s) still kicking about with the old colours. They'll get round to repainting them eventually (maybe).

I'm assuming that's a political red, in the way many folk refer to the Irish flag as green, white and gold?

I like it though, the Dutch, resplendent in their Strathclyde red strips. :D

Exactly. If it was ever reintroduced, they might call it "Strathclyde Transport Tangerine" or something.

The murder happened on the 10th December 1945.

"A young railway fireman burst into the Stationmasters Room at Pollokshields East Station in Scotland and shot Miss Bradshaw, the clerk and the porter Robert Brown. The motive was theft from the safe. Due to doubts about his sanity he was sentenced to life imprisonment."

The guard you refer to was in the late 80's.

The current stationmaster at Pollokshields East is a pretty grumpy fellow. One morning a few years ago, he was having a bit of a domestic with his wife in the ticket office.
