The Hidden Glasgow Forums

In honour of the forthcoming seventh birthday of Hidden Glasgow, here is my list of seven top hidden bits of Glasgow. Hidden in plain sight, of course. Would anyone else care to submit a seven? I have set up another thread, called Seven for the Seventh - Discussion, for discussing these lists. So could we keep this thread *just* for lists of seven favourite structures, places or topics, please [Mods, can you indulge me on this, and keep good order?].

1 - William Cunningham of Lainshaw's mansion, incorporated into the Royal Exchange (GOMA).
2 - The unmarked grave of Pierre Emile L'Angelier, in Ramshorn Churchyard, Ingram Street.
3 - The steeple of the Merchants' Hall, incorporated into the fish market in Bridgegate.
4 - Sunlight Cottages, in Kelvingrove Park.
5 - The remains of Albany Place, on the north side of Sauchiehall Street.
6 - The bust of Ludwig van Beethoven, at the west end of Renfrew Street.
7 - St Mungo's Well, in the underchurch of the High Church, Castle Street.

1. Botanic Gardens Station, sneakily peeking out from beneath the ground.
2. Lister Plaque Royal Infirmary, hidden by layers of dirt.
3. Strathbungo Railway Station, masquerading as a normal corner shop.
4. Rotundas at the Clyde.
5. The electrical substation at Battlefield Monument, now Agenda bar.
6. Twomax Building in Gorbals, oldest iron framed building in Glasgow.
7. Original public baths for Pollokshaws, hidden in a side street.

1.The 'Hatrack' St Vincent Street.
2.JJ Burnet's Banking Hall (now Jigsaw) corner of Ingram and Glassford Streets.
3.The jointed tail of the equine statue, William III, in Cathedral Square.
4.The view from Charles Wilson's Park area, looking south and west.
5.The Govan Press busts in Govan Road (I would have chosen Beethoven, but Ronnie got there first).
6.Goosedubs.
7.The Hogback stones at Govan Old Parish Church

lovely idea for a thread.... a few of my 7 have been listed already... but ill try to add a few more!!

1. the big old bull on the clydeport building
2. the beautiful fountain @foam@ in greenbank gardens
3. i'll second looking down into the old botanics station, a wee window into the past... or indeed up out of it!!
4. the view over the city from the cathkin braes
5. shipka pass... for the name and well the artworkk!
6. the canal... i dont know why but i always find it suprising that Glasgow has a canal!!
7. a wonder i havent seen for a good number of years is the anatomy museum, a truely hidden .... id say delight but thats not quite right. it is a wonder though. a bizarre and fetishistic wonder!

Not necessarily in order of preference and I have mentioned most of these before in previous posts:

1. The old Art Deco Dental Hospital on Renfrew Street
2. View north across Glasgow from the flagpole on top of Camp Hill at Queen’s Park
3. The red brick Kinning Park Sewage Pumping Station built 1909 at the corner of Seaward St. & Milnpark Street.
4. Craigton Cemetery, neglected and not much visited but a fascinating place
5. The Sunken Garden in Bellahouston Park, actually the footprint of Bellahouston House.
6. The 1840’s villa at no. 49 Otago St. which looks so small at the front but descends all the way down to the banks of the Kelvin at the back.
7. The North Wood, Pollok Park [although sadly not for much longer it seems].

1. David Dale’s grave in the Ramshorn Kirk.


2. The Tram ‘rosettes’ on many tenement walls.


3. The ‘washing poles’ on Glasgow Green.


4. The gimpse of the ‘Molly’ beside the Great Eastern.


5. The Cherub above the doorway of the old British Linen Bank, 215 High St.


6. The canopy rings of the old George Hotel above the Virgin store on Buchanan St.


7. The ‘Tontine Heads’ in the garden at the rear of Provand’s Lordship.

Brilliant Idea. Love the pictures too. Maybe someone take these down and post a total at the end along with pictures would be fantastic. Not asking too much for a new guy am I?
My intention is to take my kids in a year or so to Glasgow and show them everything (I don't care if they don't want to).

Now Scott, I'm sure you realise that given the thousands of photos posted in the site that hidden glasgow is stopping nothing!!! You just can't be doing it right

When posting, click the image button and paste in the path to the image. NOT, and I'm guessing here, the path to the web page, cos that won't work!

Hi Sharon,
As i write this and try to right-click on my mouse, to enable me to "paste" the photo from my hard drive , (that i have already previously right-clicked on the image to "copy"), this is all that appears .....
I am not given the option to paste....only the options to "undo, delete or select all" ??!!

Please excuse my ignorance and computer illiteracy ?!

Scott, you can't copy & paste directly from the hard drive, you need a host site, try 'Photobucket', it's free.
