ABBA "S.O.S."

I was sick and tired of everything,
When I called you last night from Glasgow

50 Cents P.I.M.P.

She feed them foolish fantasies, they pay her cause they wanna
I spit a little G man, and my game got her
A hour later, have that ass up in the Ramada (Ingram Street)

The Real McKenzies Kings O' Glasgow

One day in the Queen came 'to town, he went to the parade
Shtill pisht from the night before he spied her motorcade
As her car went past he made a gesture very divide
He lifted his kilt and showed his ass as dirty as the Clyde

Billy Joe Royal Cherry Hill Park

CHERRY HILL PARK

Written by B. Gilmore/R. Nix

Mary Hill used to hang out in Cherry Hill Park
The game she played lasted all day to way after dark
Now all the girls they criticized her but all the guys just idolized her
‘cause Mary Hill was such a thrill after dark, in Cherry Hill Park

Victor and Barry Kelvinside Man

There's yuppies and nouveau riche out there,

Who eat croissants and broccoli quiche out there

My fruit is a yam, I'm a Kelvinside man

(he's a man from Kelvinside)

I get fish from a van, I'm a Kelvinside man

Correction

Postby Dexter St. Clair » Fri Aug 04, 2006 5:32 pm

Thank God it was an ABBA song I got wrong. That was my street credibility almost gone.

Gorbals Melody (J Malcolm)

A raw night in January,
Soot fills a dark leaden sky in the Gorbals,
A neighbour knocks angrily,
As above rings the wail of a new baby's cry,
The bookmaker's boarding,
A fortyfive bus to his house up in Shawlands,
The advertise hoarding,
Sells a popular dram from the fairytale land,
Where they all live in castles.

Now your grace did a 45 bus run through Shawlands?

Yes it did. The old 45 bus route ran from Colston to Carnwadric and went all the way down Pollokshaws Road. It also ran along Eglinton St. so he would have had no problem catching a 45 bus from the Gorbals, a short distance away.

Just discovered a song by Eddi Reader called 'Glasgow Star'.

It's a beautiful song, her vocal on in it is the best I've ever heard from her.

Mentions Great Western Road and Buchanan Street, it also mentions Sandstone Doorways, Busking, The Last Bus Home and Rangers Songs. All things that every 'Weedgie' has some kind of experience of!

Altho not strictly in Glasgow, of course, i can't go thru Paisley Gilmour Street without thinking of Hue And Cry's "Looking For Linda" with its cheesy "..is this train for Paisley?" bit and cracking a smile.

Did a certain Mr McGinn of the Calton not have a few relevant lyrics? And - tae boot - Mr Al Jolson must have sung a few Glasgow ditties about being his time in the East End.
