African Shops in Glasgow

Postby Gary Brown » Wed Jan 21, 2009 9:05 pm

SO...I;m addicted to Tanganda Tea from Zimbabwe but Solly's have switched to some stuff from Malawi (good but not the same). Any other African shops in or around Glasgow?

Hi, there is a shop on Duke Street, 'Motherland' or something like that, its near the Louden Tavern. I found a number 0141 551 8466 , I can't vouch for its accuracy.

Good Luck!

There's also one on Paisley Road West, between The Grapes and The District bar. Do I sense a connection here?

There's also one near the Expressway roundabout on Dumbarton Road.
Don't know if they sell foodstuffs though.

Yes that's the one I would mention too it was formerly called "Salvanos Lebon Business" and I always wondered what was inside. It is now re named "African Shop" probably to clear up that matter as it did look like the base for a phonejacker episode or a 419 scam.

It appears that they do stock food as here is a previous food hygiene report from Glasgow City Council in 2007.

Let me know if they have a good selection of tea if you visit, I am just round the corner I may pick some up.

There's another African shop on Duke Street - it's opposite Bellgrove St. Last time I was in, it seemed a bit better stocked than the one near the Loudon.

There's one on Viccy Road called "Affriccare" or similar. On the Queens Park Station side between the Bank of Scotland and the Royal Bank.

Hi just noticed these posts.
I stumbled upon the "Salvanos Lebon" African shop in Thornwood while I was visiting what appears to be the only homebrewing shop (about 2 doors away) in Glasgow at that time. (I dont know if this is still the case?) They sell some VERY nice (& VERY HOT) habanero peppers, which if you can stand the heat, have a very unique "raspberry fruity" flavour. I got about a dozen for a knockdown price of £1.50 which is pretty excellent.
Give it a check if you go for that sort of thing. I think these hard to find places deserve championing. Who knows what rare delicacies you might find?

I've passed it a lot in recent months, and to be frank, it looks absolutely fucking bogging. I wouldn't dream of buying food from such a hoaching establishment.

The home brew shop is excellent for advice.

Aye, I read the report!
I must admit she was good enough to open up a fresh box of peppers when I was there as the ones on display had seen better days. The ones I got were of very good quality & I always wash em before use.
As for any of the meat products? - well that may be a different story!?
