It's still there, but now appears be trading as part of the Euronics group. Euronics is basically the same as what G,H,R, and Stepek were doing (improving their buying power by clubbing together), but at a European level.

Does anyone know the fate of the above Stepek was the building torn down or redeveloped?

Nice pic, given that every shot of it I've seen lately shows it in its present sorry state!

Planning permission was granted to turn it into flats with the facade retained, but as far as I know, this hasn't started - the detail and rear pics on the link below were taken by myself in February this year:

http://www.scottishcinemas.org.uk/scotl ... house.html

As far as I understand, some of the interior is still recognisable as an old theatre.

There was also a Stepek in Cambuslang's Main St - originally along at the end near the train station, then further east in the old Woolies, before mysteriously moving back to their original premises a few years later. My family hired a TV from it for years and years, well into the 1990s, at a fixed rate which they promised never to put up - £1.50 a week!

We also hired a small hi-fi, a wee cheap Bush midi effort, worth about 20 quid. After a couple of years, we told them we no longer wanted it, they told us just to drop it off next time we were passing. I think it still lives in the loft somewhere!

I remember the adverts, but I don't recall ever seeing a Glenns, Hutchison or Robertson shop. Was it a regional consortium, with one retailer to each area?

actually Jan Stepek is my grandad.

BROKEN LINK FIXED

Thanks, Dex. Not quite sure how it got broken in the first place.

I've yet to meet anyone who has a bad word to say about your grandfather, Katie. Is there perhaps anything you or your family could add to this thread? This is primarily an information sharing site, and I'm sure many of us would be glad to hear more of the Stepek history.
