I've never met your dad but did meet your grandfather a few times and you’re Uncle John quite a number of times during my days as the Scottish Sales Manger for JVC audio and video back in the 1980’s. JVC was distributed by a company called Clyde Factors (Electrical) Ltd who were in Washington Street at the time. Your dad may be familiar with the Woolfson family business who owned the company from 1927 to 1990.

Talking of Stepek, here's an old pic of Motherwell with Stepek store left of centre.

That picture is from the mid-70s, prior to pedestrianisation of Brandon Street.

Before Stepek, that store was occupied by local TV, radio and musical instrument retailer Mills, who moved there in the early 70s due to redevelopment of their old location (further along Brandon Street). IIRC, it was a William Low's before that.

The Glens on Byres Road has suddenly turned into a massive Vodafone shop, not sure when that happened!

An old thread but still interesting. It was only fairly recently that I read of Jan Stepek passing, I believe he may have been in his 90's. Hutchisons I remember very well. They had a shop in Crow road and were a highly respected family owned firm. I passed their shop every day because my family had a radio tv electrical and furniture store under the high flats at Anniesland Cross. Robertsons was owned by the husband of one of my cousins and at one time had about 10 shops I believe. I think Robertsons Glens and Stepek finally became part of a large buying group.

Yes he was 90 when he died, then his wife died 22 days after him.

Have memories of the Stepek on the corner of Shettleston Road and Chester St - it's now a branch of Boots!

Martin has been involved with promoting family businesses for many years. He thinks that universities offering business degrees should have a section that concentrates on family businesses and not just large corporate companies. I have to say l totally agree with him.
