Public access to the Cenotaph

Postby onyirtodd » Wed Nov 12, 2008 4:59 pm

I was deeply saddened and not a little angered to find that the Cenotaph in George Square isn't accessible to the public just one day after Armistice Day in order to allow workies to tart up the Square in preparation for Christmas (or whatever we're expected to call it nowadays).

Whoever authorised this should be subject to an interview without coffee.

As a former member of the armed forces I completely agree.

The Cenotaph should be open and available for a couple of weeks either side of Remembrance Day.
It is the civic representation of honour paid to the fallen soldiers of our city.

I was thinking that too on the way home from work last night. We need a bastard ticket for everything these days.

I fail to see why we need
A) the christmas lights turn on on Nov 16th
B) a bloody great stage to do it from (and why the stage has to stay (as it did last year) right the way through until Hogmanany -- is that really cheaper than 2 hires?
C) Why the turn on is ticketed...its not as if the lights cover the whole city anyway
D) Why they use tickmaster to issue tickets for Lights and Hogmanay

i guess there may be some sort of notion that the lights stimulate the festive consumer spirit.

But, to continue your list:

E) can we not have an upgrade from the hideous tacky, dated monstrosities that our council tax will be illuminating a couple of weeks before they should be foisted on us, how much does it even cost to power these "decorations"- the twinkly trees look so magical, then enter the supposed heart of glasgow and we get a xmas nighmare, granted given the general and consistent embarassment that is george square, perhaps there is little point in trying. What happened to glasgow with style!!!!??????????

apologies for the extended entry!

George Square lights from the City Chambers in December last year . . tasteless, tacky or a yuletide fantasy? You decide!
