Postby glasgowken » Tue Oct 21, 2008 1:12 am

Anyone have a list of shipping companies which had their head offices in Glasgow or nearby.
So far I only know of,

Clan Line
Clyde Shipping Co
Loch Line

Also:

P. Henderson & Co. Ltd. [Blue Funnel Line]

William Robertson Shipowners Ltd. [Gem Line]

There are probably some more that I have forgotten.

Quite a few shipping lines used to have branch offices in Glasgow. Others used Glasgow based firms of shipbrokers to act as their local agents.

In the 1970's I worked for a firm called Roxburgh Henderson & Co. Ltd. This firm came into being as a result of an amalgamation between P. Henderson & Co. and an old Glasgow company called Roxburgh, Colin Scott who I think had originally been the operators of the Loch Line. The Blue Funnel Line by this time was owned by the Ocean Group in Liverpool. I remember also being told that the Loch Line was still operating sailing ships into the first decade of the 20th Century, long after just about everybody else had long since gone over to steam.

By the 1970's general cargo shipping on the Clyde was pretty much on the way out, with regular liner sailings operating from King George V Dock only. Containerisation would soon prove to be the final nail in the coffin.

Nice selection there Robert :)
That wee 2nd hand furniture place next to Morrison's at Partick had a full size ship's steering wheel in it. I was tempted to buy
