I spoke with someone today who has promised to try and find out more detail but HH's friend would appear to be on to something.

There is somewhere else where old grave stones ended up in a quarry but I need more information before I confirm the location

This was a common occurrence in the 1800's. I know of a burial ground in Newburgh, Fife where the stones were removed and put in a quarry. It wasn't to make way for houses, I am sure it was to place more burials in the grave yard.

Well, that's that solved.

Dear Mr MacKenzie

The gravestones came to the Botanic Gardens from the Southern Necropolis
in the 1950s and were badly damaged /broken at that time. Most of them
were used to build a wall on the south side of the Kibble Palace (now
removed) and a few have been used in other places around the Gardens. We
generally try to ensure that the wording is not exposed but need to
attend to this in the area near to the public toilets.

So, should we be looking for the original headstone of Alexander "Greek" Thomson, which "went missing" from the Southern Necropolis sometime last century ... is it part of a flower bed in the Botanics?

Seriously, though, has the council made a habit of stealing gravestones, whether broken or not, and reusing them in other contexts? Was this - and is this still - official policy? Or will people be disciplined?

Given that it was done in the 1950 Ronnie it may be difficult finding the person responsible

As for it being current Council policy - I will be happy to seek clarification for you.
