Those things that you see in the country at the side of fiel

Postby eob » Wed Aug 20, 2008 4:11 pm

Hello,
seems that it is a knowledgeable bunch that frequent this site, so I hope you can help me with something that has been troubling me since I was a young lad. (Stop laughing at the back! ::): )

What are those things seen in the country, generally at the side of fields, for?
They are about 5 foot high, have a white post with a little apex roof which is mostly orange or red.

Tried google but can never seem to find an answer. The most viable explanation that I have had is that they are measuring points for fallout from Chernobyl.

The person with the best answer wins a chocolate watch.

I had to go and double-check what a snowpole looked like again to confirm my thoughts(snowpole being my first one too CB!). But a snowpole is just that...a painted pole. It's not to distiguish where fields are, or to mark fields, more to gauge depth of snow and direction of road. No need for a wee apex-roofed Scottish-wind trap.

I have just been informed(after a quick pre-post 'phone call), it's summat to do with insects. Under the 'roof' there is the equivelant of fly paper. It allows the farmer to see what insects, and amounts, he has and this then lets farmer target more accurately his insect issue. The orange roof attracts them.

Do I win?

Insects are also required for pollination, farmer can check for the right type of insects too
Due to cutbacks, the light at the end of the tunnel is off until further notice!

Not pleasant, but I'll pitch in my tuppence....
I had always understood that these were stand out/easily recognised marker posts for helicopter surveys of national gas infra-structure lines. Stand to be corrected but, did not Sims Automatics of Dawsholm Bell Jet Ranger G-WOSP get trashed on a similar survey of electricity lines further South in Cumbria/Lancashire some years back?

The gas line explanation was the one that I had in mind too...
All the world seems in tune on a Spring afternoon, when we're poisoning pigeons in the park.

High pressure gas or oil so no one digs them up by accident and so that the route can be followed by helicopters during inspections. You also normally find small concrete "tombstones" with contact details along the routes at roads, ditches, rivers etc

I love it. It's fun to find nice useless but interesting trivia that I didn't even know I wanted to know! :D Wee roofs and wee tombstones, great!

I have to ask - what does a fruit machine supplier have to do with bell jet ranger g-wosp's and electrical surveys? I am confused!
Eighty percent of success is showing up.

Confused eh...

Should we put him out of his misery dear reader?

Go on then.....

Sims Automatics of Dawsholm Bell Jet Ranger G-WOSP is a plane referance mixed in with gobbledy gook me thinks

As to the pointy hated orange things they are indeed gas lines the reason that they is orange is to give contrast to the ground but also to give a colour referance to the pipe. Ie the orange bit is always orange so if you get a leek in the pipe the ground colour might change in places but if you know a fixed colour it removes any disparity in photo equiptment. IE(no 2) in each pic the orange will change with light intensity colour etc so it gives you a good controle as to what is a leek and what is backgroud 'clutter' or 'noise' on the picture
Also comes in a spiffy circular version and will be near concrete gas signs( that look like fairground shooting targets in shape!)!!

Hmmm I wonder what happens if i press that lever.... Ahh It operates that shiny new plug socket!
