Google - Streetview

Postby Verbal Kint » Wed Jul 09, 2008 11:02 am

Opening a thread for sightings of the google streetview car.

http://maps.google.com/help/maps/streetview/

The Google Streetview car documented my street "Medwyn Street in Whiteinch" this morning I was out talking to my neighbour and she asked why a car marked google would be slowly driving down the street with a six foot contraption on top of it.

Can't believe I missed was going to pull a moonie out my window when it came.

Have a look out for it should look something like this.

Were you in a car passing it or following it. Many folks can be seen tailing the car in the NY pictures.

So angry I missed it would have chased it all around town.

Anyone got any ideas as to when they will put the pics up really looking forward to seeing them! My neighbour was pretty much staringg at the car so can't wait to see her body language as the face will be blurred.

There's still an ongoing debate with Google, because in the UK and Europe they can't publish peoples faces without their prior consent .. unlike in the USA where the only way Google remove your face / license plate etc, is by a request from the individual.

Apparently they're developing some algorithm that blurs out peoples faces .. which needs a lot of work, see below:

This week a blog posting from a Google employee demonstrated a software tool which aims to automatically blur the faces of people appearing in its images. The post admits that the software still needs some work, since it currently also blurs the faces of horses in New York's Central park.

Actually, that probably wouldn't concern them. Sure, it'd look silly, but it's probably better to be overly cautious than to leave themselves open to lawsuits. Better to have scary looking horses than unblurred faces.

More likely, is it's bloody difficult to design something which can detect faces in all lighting conditions, at all angles. If they can automate that process totally, and with near-100% accuracy, then they've solved an intensely difficult problem in computing science.

I can do better than that if I take all my kit off...

...the ultimate test. It'll have its work cut out.

The world is not yet prepared; even I don't dare look in the mirror. :D

Let me know when it's headed for East Kilbride.

I followed the car around the west end for a few streets, my passenger got a few snaps so I'll get them off him and stick em up.

I guess there's more than the one? I saw it kicking about in Stockbridge (Embro) last week.

Plus, there's a lot of hooha about loss of privacy (according to the papers anyway), yer stumbling-to-the-shops likeness possibly being splashed all over the web. Is it just me who isn't all that fussed? Should I be?

It was going along Maryhill Road this morning, well to be accurate it was parked outside the bakers whilst the driver got a bacon roll
