Just wanted to say thanks for such an interesting topic. Im a born and bred Bankie, it brought back lots of memories to me, especially singers where all my family worked, I was too young to work there :). Great pictures. Remember too well going into woolies on a saturday, and walking up Bridge Street to the chippy.

Hi, hope this is the right section of the forum for this request.
I'm looking for any information on what became of the Singer Clock after it was switched off in the late 1960's. I know some people claim that it disappeared, and others say it was shipped to New York. I also know that the hands were melted down and turned into souvenir ashtrays, but what about the rest of it?
Any little snippet of info would be a great help.

I hope you are all well. Just a short note to let you know I have added an old film that I took in 1975 of Clydebank. I shot it on Super 8 cine film. It jumps a bit in places as it is very old but well worth a watch I think. I hope you enjoy it. Should bring back some memories for a lot of you.

I did a printout of the thread and took it to my old uncle who lives close to me down here in west Yorkshire - he was born & brought up in Singer Street with my maw and the other 6 weans, survived the Blitz, been living down here for 50 years now.

They brought a tear to his eye.

That Super 8 film was fascinating. I don't remember Clydebank looking quite that scabrous back then but there you go. Especially good to see the vanished pub frontages, Woolies and the cranes. A real shame though that he just seems to have missed filming The Treadle (see recent discussion of it on the Demolished Dalmuir thread). The last couple of shots were filmed on its location but its gone already.

I agree - what a tremendous little snapshot of 70's 'Bank.

I loved the shot of a very lonely and extremely yellow Gerry's mobile snack bar. I'm pretty sure the much more modest mobile snack bar that howfed outside Whiskey Joe's was named Gerry's too. Same proprietor?

nah doorstop,the caravan was owned by gerry malcolm in the seventies .it sat on union st where the remploy is now.he ran an ice cream van round peterson park for a while as well.he sadly passed away and there is a bench dedicated to him down at rhu.

Wow!!! Gerry Malcolm a name from the past, i can confirm Gerry ran the ice cream van around Peterson park. As kids we used to call him Sgt Bilko, a true gent...
