Can Anyone Help Me?

Postby shuttle534 » Mon May 31, 2004 3:45 pm

I'm trying to find out the history of an old style house that is located near Barrhead on Parkhouse Road. It is being used as a care home at the moment. I don't know where to start. :( Thought about the Mitchell Library but again don't know where to look. :( Glasgow Room ???
Any advice please

Try the local library nearest to the house first.
You could also go in to the building and ask for any info on the house or the previous owners.

Glasgow rooms a safe bet also .

It is closer to Barrhead than the Ashoka. You really only get a glimps of it unless you are walking. They are building a new housing estate right beside it now. On the other side is some sort of big house that is obscured by the trees.
I think that there were stables ajoined to the place but they were demolished very recently. wonder if they got planning permission for that one?

It was a retreat for the Montford Fathers (missionary priests... something along the lines of the Franciscans) and is called Montford House. I'm led to believe there are some Montford fathers still in residence there although they now only own a small part of the estate... hence the developers!

The next time you're there, try chapping the door and they'll give you a tour of the chapel and maybe even the house :D

Hope this helps (hope this is the right bloody place :? )

Hi all
I have not been along there for many years but I remember going up that road towards Barrhead you passed Parkhouse farm, diagonally opposite was the Red house then just before the Glasgow boundary sign there was a very large white house (Southside) that was a care home in the 60's & 70's. The ground keepers daughter was Jane Hughes She lived in the little cottage right before the castle like turret wall of Montford
Next was Montford Hall a Monks retreat.I think their lands went all the way to the park. Across from those were a couple of big white private houses. further along the north side there was a farm set back from the road with a stone wall that went all the way to the School.
I remember the old church yard with the grave stones on the corner with the lane heading down to bower walls.
between the church yard & the Farm was an old orchard where some lovely apples could be had if you were brave enough. They built a club on the grave yard site.
