Mystery football ground, Polmadie

Question came up over on the "Football Ground Guide" website about this place:

http://maps.live.com/default.aspx?v=2&F ... &encType=1

It's just behind the Polmadie engine sheds (or whatever they're called today). My theory is that it might have been the recreation ground of the Polmadie Railway Club at one time. Anyone know?

Is that maybe Rutherglen Glencairn's old ground?

I know their ground was compulsorily purchased as part of the M74 build. Their new gound is being built on the other side of the railway from Polmadie at present.

That is Roseberry Park, the home of now defunct Shawfield Juniors. Glencairn's old ground, Southcroft Park is to the south east just where Glasgow Road crosses the railway.

Roseberry Park in it's heyday...

Absolutely superb Photo Schiehallion, is this just a one off photo you have of football grounds in Glasgow? Or perhaps you have others?

Just for correctness, Shawfield's ground was spelt Rosebery Park.

I've got a few others - any one in particular?

You sure about the spelling? I'd say it's Roseberry Park, any reference on the net is Roseberry Park and Roseberry Street runs right through Oatlands two streets from the ground.

Is the Roseberry St on the maps spelt wrong?

I would be interested in seeing ALL of the others, escpecially Junior clubs.

99.9% sure it is Rosebery, as i a historian of Junior football and my club Pollok played there for a season in the 1920's when they vacated their old ground Haggs Park (within Pollok Park) and any references in the newspapers then have it spelt with one R. Also there are quite a few references to Rosebery Park' on the net.

I am gutted though, as i went to Shawfields ground about 18 months ago with a camera (before the terracing/buildings/ground was demolished) but couldnt get over the high wall. Only part of the front brick wall now stands. Im wondering if the demolition company may have taken photos of the ground before it was demolished?

Off on a tangent here, but I was always intrigued as to why Pollok took their name from the area despite playing in Shawlands/Pollokshaws. I suppose that's answered now.

Just came across this forum and I am looking for some information if anyone has local knowledge.

My late Grandfather won a silver hallmarked medal with the following engraving.

C.J.F.T.
WON BY
Polmadie Woodburn F.C.
1913
P BRYANT

I know that this an extremely long shot but I would appreciate any information at all.

I'd reckon Polmadie Woodburn FC were more likely to be a juvenile or amateur team. What age would your grandfather have been in 1913?

They are definitely not a junior side (Crown Athletic then later Oatlands were Polmadie's junior club.)

The C.J.F.T. is intriguing.

The J could be junior only as in wee kids football with maybe the medal holder managing them or it could be juvenile.

The C may be Central denoting a central Scottish region.

The T could be trophy as you say, or tournament?

My Grandfather was born in 1894 so he would have been 18 or 19 at the time. I believe he had a trial for Partick Thistle but then the war broke out. He sustained a serious foot injury in the war and was unable to play football again.

The name was Rosebery. Not done the research but the ground almost certainly linked to Lord Rosebery, past Prime Minister, President of Hearts and patron of the SFA.

The primrose and pink hoops Scotland played in at the turn of the nineteenth century and for a few games in the late 1940s were his family's racing colours. I am writing a book for Historic Scotland on the sports architecture of Glasgow and it's heartbreaking to see the destruction in the last ten years...

Schiehallion - do you know who owns copyright in that pic?
